About this property

Park on the road outside the property and enter into a charming open-plan living space with a feature fireplace and the welcoming glow of a woodburning stove, making this space ideal for guests to relax with a coffee and plan the day ahead of them from the stylish sitting area. When mealtimes call, cook up a storm in the contemporary kitchen and enjoy a meal at the dining table, whilst a shared rear patio with furniture is an ideal space for breakfast in the sunshine. This property houses two well-presented bedrooms and a bathroom where guests can take a quick shower or enjoy a soak amongst the bubbles, so choose between two doubles and cosy up for the night. Richmond is a delightful town in North Yorkshire, with the centre only a brief stroll from the property. Richmond houses a wealth of tasty eateries and pubs, so guests can dine out before stocking up on essentials at the local convenience store or supermarket; the charming Finkle Street is dotted with independent cafés, butchers, clothing shops, restaurants, and a Post Office, whilst Rosemary Street is home to the excellent Cocina tapas restaurant, Newbiggin with Wilfred’s canteen. The town also offers a selection of attractions and exciting things to do and see, including walks beside the River Swale, Culloden Tower, Richmond Falls, St Martin’s Priory and The Station, and the option to try out a game or two at Richmond Yorks Golf Club. Travelling over the bridge, guests can reach Billy Bank Woods, a haven for wildlife spotting and exploring, whilst Bay Tree Cottage is also an ideal stopping point for coast-to-coast walkers. Further from the property you will find the fantastic Yorkshire Dales National Park containing a wealth of walks, mountain biking trails and bird watching opportunities. Locations within the region include Wensley Waterfall, Aysgarth where there is a waterfall, walk, quaint village and visitor centre, and Calver Hill. Guests can also visit the North York Moors National Park where the site of Whorlton Castle awaits, as well as The Wainstones and Ingleby Incline. Enjoy all of this and so much more with a stay at the charming Bay Tree Cottage.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.

Karen and Ian's very well appointed cottage, with lovely touches and comfortable sofas and beds, was a pleasure to stay in. We had everything we needed. Welcome pack including wine a lovely touch. Despite a rather wet few days we never even used our car, the walk into town is good for the leg muscles but not overly strenuous. Great walks along the River Swale in both directions, we all loved Hudswell Woods, especially our dog Gem, she also made it to the top of the Castle Tower - great views. Loved exploring all the little hidden streets with their quirky houses. Richmond is a very dog friendly town, almost every shop and pub have dog treats behind the counter and water bowls outside. It was great to come back to such cosy accommodation after a day out. We've stayed in places that haven't felt particularly welcoming, Bay Tree Cottage has a really nice vibe. Highly recommend.

River walks and facilities all within walking distance, and the cottage was spotlessly clean and nicely furnished. Had a great week and would recommend this cottage to anyone.

Having stayed in Richmond before, in a lovely cottage that didn’t have vehicular access, I was particularly looking for one that had parking available with no time limit. Bay tree cottage fitted the bill, free parking was available for two vehicles around the Green on a first come first served basis. There is also a car park just at the end of the Green, but we didn’t need to use it. The cottage itself is very well appointed, and had everything we needed and more! It was lovely and clean and had comfortable beds. The furnishings were high quality and in good condition, and the cottage was lovely and warm. Wood and kindling were left for the wood burner, I used it twice in the evenings, and found it to be very easy to light and quick to get hot. We had vehicle problems on our journey to the cottage, Ian was very helpful and recommended his usual garage to us for repair. We have never before had such attentive hosts, we were asked before our arrival, which wine we preferred for our complimentary welcome pack. And received a text en route, to notify us the cottage was ready for us ahead of the 3pm arrival time. Ian also text once we had settled in to ask if there were any problems (there weren’t) and said to let him know if we had any issues with the cottage. Thank you Ian and Karen, for your attention to detail, pride in your cottage, and for going above and beyond any other hosts we have ever had! Best wishes Angie and Warren
