It really is all about the squirrels!Fantastic, stunning location. Yes, the house is old and a bit quirky in places, but the kitchen is very well equipped and the living area has everything you really need. And there are literally squirrels everywhere outside - and birds too.We spent hours mesmerised by the little visitors who are unbelievably easy to view so long as you top up the feeders with the (free) food. Wrap up warm for the conservatory in the cooler months. The location, whilst fairly remote, is still really convenient for Hawes. The footpath to the sanctuary does run past the house, but we found the walkers respectful. The owner is very responsive and a pleasure to deal with. Would definitely visit again and found it very difficult to leave.Come for the squirrels if nothing else.

The location makes this place amazing. Although you are on a public footpath and end up with walkers watching squirrels on your patio. However the barn really needs a general update . It looked tired and dated. The kitchen is very equipped . The heating system failed on arrival , which made for a chilly start. But was fixed later in week. Downstairs is comfortable. Upstairs is a nightmare. Two very small crammed bedrooms. The bedlinen was of poor quality. If you charge these prices you should invest in getting a reliable laundry service in. Much nicer , fresh white linen. We felt the location was 5 star but accommodation only 2 star . You have a wonderful asset. Perhaps attention to details would help and a general refurbishment might needed . The enclosed is not easy access and you have take your dogs outside on to the footpath and then access the garden through a gate . It would have made life simpler to have access directly from the patio . The conservatory which is where you want to spend time to watch the wild life could really do with a heater . As it’s very chilly . And it leaks in the rain . The host was helpful about the lack of heating and hot water , he had a lovely neighbour come over to see if he could see what was wrong with the boiler, but he agreed with us that it needed an engineer. The immersion heater sorted the hot water out . Also we were told to use bottled water once we arrived . There was some provided to start you off but we would of liked to have known prior to arrival. The red squirrels were definitely amazing. I only wish the cottage matched them.

A great setting and lots of wild life, especially woodland birds and red squirrels. Fairly well equipped cottage but very run down in parts. A damp smell persistent all over with stained walls and ceilings. Needs a really good deep clean and paint job, although both bathrooms and kitchen were clean. Host very welcoming and helpful with a couple of issues in the cottage but needs to invest in the property a bit...its tired and tatty. Also lots of walkers have access to the cottage and we were surprised to have so many people walking past the windows whilst still in our nightware! Only worth the money because of the red squirrels.
