The hamlet of Gayle is famous for Gayle Mill, which is thought to be the oldest structurally unaltered cotton mill in existence, with this cottage having links to the mill due to the fact that it was formally owned by the Anderson family, who were the last owners of the mill before it was renovated. Nearby Hawes is a popular holiday destination with a wide range of amenities including shops, pubs and tea rooms and the not-to-be-missed Wensleydale Creamery, which is just a short stroll from the doorstep. Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community.
