Perfectly positioned in the heart of Knaresborough market place, this apartment, with its bay window and panoramic view, enables guests to observe the hustle and bustle of market town life. In particular, the Wednesday market (enshrined in the Domesday Book) and more recently, the once-a-month Saturday artisans’ market. The apartment, set across three floors has a quirky thoughtful, décor, enhancing the character and charm of the Grade ll listed building’s heritage, and was built circa 1760.
On the ground floor is a hallway shared with Hogwood Cottage (UK33574). Once inside, a door will lead you to Market Place View and open onto a curved staircase leading to the first floor with a lovely bright living room with high ceilings, overlooking the marketplace, and with a table and chairs strategically placed in the bay window. The kitchen, although small, is well equipped. A further flight of stairs leads up to the second floor to the stylish shower room with a large walk-in shower. The first of the two bedrooms is on this floor with views out over the marketplace. On the third floor is the second bedroom and it is a lovely, bright and open space with a large double bed and a bath. Please note that because of the architectural style of the property, the stairs, although steeped in charm, could be a problem for people less mobile. There is slightly limited head room just as you leave the stairs to enter the bedroom.
The central location of this charming holiday apartment means you don’t even need to get in the car to sample the delights of the local area. There is a great selection of pubs, restaurants and cafés, as well as an array of independent shops to potter around. Just around the corner, you can cut through the castle grounds which is pretty spectacular, but first, admire the breath-taking view of the viaduct before walking down the straggling steps to Waterside. Here you will find the riverside promenade dotted with cafés and rowing boats that you can hire out along the River Nidd.
For those keen on walking there are many local walks nearby. Visit Old Mother Shipton’s Cave or meander along the Nidd Gorge. Knaresborough train station can be reached within a 5-minute walk with trains taking you to Harrogate in less than 10 minutes, or York within half an hour. The elegant spa town of Harrogate is a brilliant day out with its Royal Pump Museum, restored Turkish baths, and of course, the famous Betty’s tea rooms, offering the best afternoon tea for miles. The walled city of York with its cobbled streets is a fabulous day out, with its numerous theatres, galleries and museums, or simply grab a drink at one of the many local bars before heading for a delicious meal.
Slightly further afield, the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales National Park and coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough can all easily be reached by train or car.

This review for 21 Market Place View, in marketplace Karesborough, was going to get 5 stars, because after reading the reviews we couldn’t wait to book our week away. Unfortunately, we must start to deduct stars for a few issues that let it down. Well let us start at the front door, ….. although we have the ‘apartments’, with the two bedrooms there is a self-contained unit out he back door, Hogwood Cottage. Nothing weird or wonderful about that, but we both go out the same front door. Again, nothing weird, but when ‘we leave’ the doors locked , but on our return, it’s open. Whoever was staying behind us were in and out and didn’t lock the door. ( no biggy, and we are a trusting group.) but it was irritating. So now that we are through the door and have a couple of cases and a few bags of stuff to take upstairs and let the fun begin ….. nope !! I looked over the blurb about the place and the stairs are advertised as “quirky”, however I would describe them as more downright dangerous. Oh dear, there goes another star …. Yes it’s a grade 2 listed building and there are certain restrictions on what you can and cannot do, but a ‘treacherous stair’ would be something I wouldn’t expect inside the property. Now before we go on, can I say that the essence of this review isn’t favourable, as you can tell. It starts with the stairs and goes downhill from here on. The kitchen is very small, large enough to make a breakfast or an evening snack, but really, that’s it. The main living, viewing, sitting area is basic. The seating really isn’t ‘comfortable’, the windows need a good clean and a coat of paint. Actually, the property could do with a good freshen up. The bathroom, on the second floor ( and with the only toilet for the two rooms, …. Whoops, there goes another star ), is a bit dark. Great for pictures but no use for washing and shaving. Speaking of washing and shaving, there’s was NO hot water for the sink, plenty in the skating rink of a shower, but alas non in the bowl / sink. [ and as a quick comment, there’s a nail sticking out just at the toilet pan, just where your feet go …. If you’re a man ] The main bedroom, next to the bathroom ….. the bed wasn’t that comfortable, and I constantly stood on an electrical extension cable that was used for the bedside table lamps. Because it isn’t long enough it goes diagonally across the floor from the socket to the side of the bed. The other bedroom ( up yet another ‘quirky’ twisty set of stairs ) has a bath and a sink, but no WC, and low ceiling height, coupled with the beams, that room is not really for taller people. I hate to say it but, that’s another star away. Once you have negotiated all that, and you think “I am a bit disappointed and disillusioned in this place, but I suppose we’re here to explore the region and this is only a base, I can put up with the deficiencies I’m landed with, and once I’ve had a good nights sleep, we’ll be up and away in the morning anyway “ …. So, you were thinking about a nice relaxing quiet visit …. Think again. It’s very handy having a Café Nero just across the square, that is until the café gets its morning delivery , @ 6:10 AM in the morning!!! The delivery is made by refrigerator truck which is left running the entire time of the delivery, which goes on for about twenty minutes, and it is noisy!! Apart from the driver revving his truck ( and he did it every time ) the refrigeration unit runs continuously. ( and at six in the morning that to is extremely annoying )And then there is the Knaresborough market, just outside the window. A traditional market town, with a traditional market, but in fact Knaresborough has a great market, and well worth a visit. ! Unfortunately, the preparations for this market begin at 3:00 in the morning !!! Banging and clanging the metal frames for the stalls and the vehicles with flashing lights and people shouting at each other……. [ that’s another night of disrupted sleep ]Don’t get me wrong, Knaresborough is a lovely place and there is loads of things to do, to see, places to eat in, and to …. enjoy, and as a base to visit Harrogate, York, Shipton and the surrounding area. Our visit to the area was fabulous and we totally enjoyed the visit, but the apartment was a bit of a let down, and for the details mentioned, it was not the most relaxing of breaks.

We enjoyed our stay but the access to the second bedroom in the attic is tricky. Also my husband banged his head on the low beams when he got up in the night.
