About this property

The Gaol is an outstanding self-catering accommodation in one of the most idyllic locations within the countryside of Worcestershire, offering captivating views across the River Severn and a boutique interior, making it a heavenly oasis at any time of the year. This first-floor accommodation has been designed with a couple or a small family of four in mind, perfectly located for enjoying the borders of Staffordshire and Shropshire, as well as the plethora of things to do within the year. At the end of a bracing day, open up your home for a week or two to be greeted by the contemporary kitchen/diner, where the high vaulted ceilings are a striking element to this space, another being the quality range of appliances on hand so that you can cater for yourself. As you continue through the property to the sitting room, the exposed beams give an immediate sense of the history of the property, whilst the sumptuous L-shape sofa inviting you to relax in front of the Smart 50-inch TV, balances the sense of tradition. In this room, the picture window allows you to watch the world go by and admire the views of the famous river from the comfort of the sofa; there is no better way to unwind after an action-packed day. Once the evening has drawn to a close, look forward to catching your rest within the master suite, where the exposed beams make a lovely contrast against the 21st century chandelier, framing the plush king-size, four-poster bed, yet the pièce de résistance is the views. Concluding the interior and enjoying the same immaculate interior design as the master suite is bedroom two, enjoying a twin set up and the impressive bathroom, boasting a freestanding bath and a spacious walk-in shower. To the exterior of the property, there is a small courtyard where you can enjoy your private, tranquil courtyard during the summer months, as well as an off-road parking spot. The Gaol is a wonderful countryside retreat to enjoy with your loved ones. Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1052417, together sleeping up to eight people.

The small village of Upper Arley rests within the Wyre Forest District of Worcestershire and within striking distance of the large market town of Kidderminster. Overlooking the River Severn, the village can be found in the West Midlands and the borders of Staffordshire and Shropshire. Within the village, you will find he magnificent Arley House and Gardens, a tearoom, St Peter’s Church of England, a Post Office with general store and across the river is the Harbour Inn, the local pub.

Our short stay was dominated by splendid weather that allowed us to eat and relax on the garden terrace with its lovely view. I have to say that it was fortunate that the Boat House was unoccupied throughout most of our stay, allowing us to use the garden terrace as and when we chose. The alternative outside space, the private garden is enclosed and far less attractive. The design of the Gaol accommodation was good although, because of the hot weather, the twin bedded room actually became quite warm at night. The occupants had to leave the door open. Not a big problem for us however. Main bedroom, sitting room and kitchen are absolutely fine. We had a small issue with the owners in that we were left with only half a toilet roll in the property at the start of the holiday, and no bath gel or shampoo in the shower. (An oversight on the part of the cleaners?). We are regular cottage users and found that the "welcome" pack of supplies was a bit basic and not really up to the generous standard of many other places we have stayed at with Sykes and others. We didn't test out the Arboretum pass, but it was there to be used.

So much space and beautiful views. It is within perfect walking distance to Arley House and Gardens and so it is great for guests to stay here for a wedding. We will definitely be visiting again and recommending this to place to our friends and family who haven’t been before! Thank you!
