The Garden Barn in Peterchurch receives high praise for its beautiful interiors, stunning gardens, and spacious, well-equipped living areas. Guests consistently highlight the warm hospitality of the hosts and the immaculate cleanliness of the property. The barn is ideal for families and groups, offering characterful bedrooms and excellent communal spaces. While a few guests noted minor issues such as bedroom ventilation and access steps, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many recommending the property for a relaxing countryside stay.
Multiple reviews describe the barn as spotlessly clean and extremely well maintained, with no negative comments regarding cleanliness.
Guests appreciate the beautiful rural setting, gardens, and proximity to local attractions like Hay-on-Wye. However, a few found Peterchurch itself less picturesque than expected and noted limited amenities in the immediate village.
The barn is described as very comfortable, spacious, and cosy, with well-appointed bedrooms and communal areas. Some minor points were raised about bed sizes and ventilation in certain rooms, but overall comfort is highly rated.
The property is praised for being well-equipped, with a high-spec kitchen, excellent living spaces, and thoughtful amenities. A few guests mentioned minor issues such as soundproofing between bedrooms and access steps, but these did not detract significantly from the overall experience.
Guests frequently mention the warm welcome from the hosts and the presence of a welcome hamper. While these gestures are highly appreciated, it should be noted that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.
During your stay at this lovingly restored retreat, you will be living in the curtilage of a Grade I listed building, Wellbrook Manor, where carbon dating has produced a date of 1374, to the delight of the owners.
The property has been sympathetically renovated and transformed into a tasteful and comfortable accommodation for families or groups alike. Much of the accommodation is on the ground floor, with a useful hallway/boot room at the entrance and two of the four bedrooms located within the original stable area to the right. To the left is the beautiful open-plan living, kitchen and dining space. The dining table seats eight guests and the sitting room area is centred around a cosy and inviting wood burning stove. The added luxury of underfloor heating throughout the ground floor makes The Garden Barn a welcoming retreat in all seasons. From the modern and well-equipped kitchen, a beautifully crafted oak staircase leads up to the galleried landing area with feature glazed floor box, exposed beams and bedroom two with a 4'6 double bed. Guests using this bedroom have use of the ground floor family shower room. From the entrance hallway, the staircase leads up to bedroom one with its king-size bed and en-suite shower room, again bursting with character with exposed timbers throughout.
Outside in the delightful grounds, guests are invited to enjoy the maze and enclosed lavender garden, with its exquisite aroma, the perfect spot to watch the sun go down.
Situated on the outer edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and close to the Wye Valley, The Garden Barn provides the perfect base for walking and exploring the very best of Herefordshire. The market towns of Hay-on-Wye, Leominster, Hereford and Ross-on-Wye are all just a short drive from the property.

The barn is very pleasant indeed. Extremely clean with basic amenities, but missing a few of the extra considerations we usually find with Rural Retreats properties. We did find the barn terribly cold inside. I imagine the underfloor heating had been turned off due to the previous heat wave but by the time we visited, although mild outside the inside of a stone barn with little natural light was very chilly. We were also pretty underwhelmed by Peterchurch the village itself. Not of course, the hosts fault. But the blurb did imply that it was a pretty village with country pubs and nice walks. In fact it's just a bit of a through road and neither of the roadside pubs had outside space to enjoy a summertime afternoon, which meant we had to go out in the car every day.
