About this property

This historic Grade II listed cottage lies alongside the River Wye in the hamlet of Hole in the Wall only a few miles from Ross on Wye. The cottage, set in its own grounds, boasts a quiet and picturesque location with striking attractions. Formerly a public house, it has at its heart a 15th century ‘cruck frame’ cottage which benefits from many original features including stone flags, wall and ceiling timbers, large bread oven, and a victorian cast iron cooking range. This cottage has recently been sympathetically and carefully styled throughout to provide a comfortable retreat. For this reason, we request there is no smoking or stag/hen parties within the house. The interior comprises a spacious, well equipped farmhouse kitchen with an adjacent dining room. The wonderful snug and its inglenook fireplace ensures a little haven to unwind with a good book. The welcoming lounge with comfortable sofas provides a good family space made cosy by the wood burning stove, particularly on winter evenings. Choose from three bedrooms for a peaceful night's sleep, you will be spoilt for choice between two double bedrooms benefitting from a Jack and Jill bathroom, and a four poster room. All bedrooms either overlook the river, fields or the garden. Outside, discover the large garden bordered by trees and a ‘holy well’, to compliment the nature of the cottage. With outdoor furniture and a barbecue, you can make yourselves right at home embracing the location in its entirety.

The small hamlet of Hole in the Wall lies in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside on the banks of the River Wye and is just 3 miles from the pretty riverside town of Ross-on-Wye. There are many local walks and cycle routes and the Herefordshire Trail and Wye Valley Walk are both close by. Nearby overlooking a large loop in the beautiful River Wye is the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye. This picturesque town has timbered Tudor houses clustered around the striking 17th century Market Hall, and there are excellent shops, tea shops, pubs and restaurants to suit every taste. The magnificent Royal Forest of Dean boasts many trails which can be enjoyed on foot, bicycle or horseback or why not try your hand at fishing, golf, canoeing or caving all of which can be enjoyed in the area. Try the local wine at the Three Choirs Vineyard or visit the waterfront Cathedral City of Gloucester with its Victorian docklands and Norman Cathedral or see the Mappa Mundi in the Norman Cathedral at Hereford. The stunning Brecon Beacon National Park, the Cotswold hills around Cheltenham, the beautiful Malvern Hills, Symonds Yat and the “book town” of Hay on Wye also make a great day out from this wonderful cottage which can be enjoyed any time of the year.

We loved it. But it is a very old property albeit modernised so a few bugs etc are inevitable. We didn't mind the stairs but perhaps a floor plan would help others to understand the arrangement of rooms etc?? It is the most beautiful part of the country but the property is down a fairly narrow lane but particulars make that clear. The walk along the river to Ross was lovely for the dogs but be warned lots of pheasants to chase! Also we had to keep our dogs on extender leads in the garden as not spaniel proof! A wonderful week.

The bathroom configuration was a little difficult with a multi generation party. Steep narrow stairs could be a problem but we coped ok. Our two dogs over the garden and we were very lucky with the weather.

The owners have obviously invested a lot of time and money in tastefully bringing the cottage up to modern day standards. However I’ve had to mark the cottage down to reflect our experience during our stay with bats, which on a couple of occasions at night gained access to two of the bedrooms causing on those occasions the occupants having to sleep on sofas in the sitting room. The first incident was on the first night of our stay. One bat gained access to the large bedroom (Windows were all closed) which also adjoins the middle bedroom via an old stable door. It flew around both bedrooms frantically, as it could pass through the gap above the closed adjoining door. The following day I was able to catch the bat using a waste bin and I released it outside away from the house. I tried to notify the owner just to inform them of our experience using the contact number provided to us, but was unable to get through. I did not see any urgency as I believed I’d resolved the problem thinking it was an isolated incident, the following 5 nights we were bat free and able to enjoy the cottage. The second incident was on the last night of our stay where 2 bats gained access to the same bedrooms as above, again the occupants had to sleep down on the sofas. This time I isolated the bedrooms and opened the windows (A recommendation gained from Google). This appeared to work as the bats was not in evidence the following morning. I would like to stress this has no reflection on the owner. I managed to speak to them on my return from holiday they are obviously caring people. Bats and their living space are protected by law and I respect this, however I’m not so keen on them flying around the bedroom.
