About this property

A charming holiday cottage ideally located in the picture-perfect Suffolk seaside village of Thorpeness. Ideal for a couple looking to get away from it all in stylish accommodation.

Thorpeness is one of Suffolk's best-kept secrets. Just a mile and a half along the beach from Aldeburgh, this charming holiday village was largely designed by the Scottish playwright and barrister Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie a century ago. He decided to create an idyllic model seaside village, inspired by the writings of JM Barrie, author of Peter Pan.

The village has a meare which can be explored in the summer time by rowing boat. Plus, there's tennis courts and a games room at the nearby Thorpeness Country Club during the summer months.

Keen walkers (either two legs or four paws!) will enjoy the area as it's ideal for walking and cycling, both along the coast and the inland countryside. You can then relax and put your feet up in your cosy cottage after a day exploring all that Suffolk has to offer. The views over the meare in the living room and front patio really are rather spectacular. Picture yourself opening a bottle of something cool and bubbly whilst taking in the magic of Thorpeness meare.

Ground Floor

A courtyard at the back of this charming cottage gives access to the kitchen, with a second door from the living room opening into the sunny front patio. There's a door between the two rooms and wooden staircase rising from the kitchen to the first-floor landing.

Living Room

This has beautiful views across The Meare and has a two seater sofa, large arm chair, natural choir carpet, Smart TV which connection to Free Sat channels.

Kitchen/Dining Room

In the kitchen/diner there's a beautiful handmade kitchen with a Smeg range cooker, fridge, dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine, microwave and a dining table to seat four people. The cottage's original stairs (Some may find them a little steep and narrow) from the kitchen lead up to the first floor. There os a washing machine and small freezer in an annex across the rear patio.

First Floor

Both the bedroom and bathroom open off the landing. The bedroom has a sisal carpet flooring and the bathroom has an attractive wooden floor.

Bedroom

There's a handmade oak king-size bed and natural coir flooring and two windows, one of which has lovely views of The Meare and the other a glimpse of the sea.

Bathroom

A large family bathroom with a magnificent freestanding bath, separate shower, sink and w.c.

Outside

There are patios to the front and rear of this semi-detached Suffolk holiday cottage with an outdoor table and chairs to seat four. The front patio has pretty views across Thorpeness Meare and a bistro-style table and two chairs on the more private back patio. There is a right of access over the back patio to the back garden of a neighbouring cottage. Across the road from the cottage you'll find The Beach House cafe/restaurant and The Meare cafe. On-road parking is usually available either on the road outside the cottage or around the corner on the beach road near the Thorpeness Country Club.

There is also a sunny patio at the front with furniture all set up ready for guests to enjoy the stunning views over Thorpeness Meare & a courtyard at the rear too with a bistro table and two chairs. This is the ideal spot for enjoying a morning coffee and planning the day’s activities. Thorpeness is a short distance away and the Meare itself is popular for boating with the charming town of Aldeburgh also nearby. Beaches worth visiting in the area include Southwold, Dunwich, Walberswick and Kessingland, so why not pack a picnic and make a day of it? Other places worth a visit include Snape Maltings, Framlingham Castle, RSPB Minsmere, Go Ape Thetford and Glemham Hall. The ideal holiday destination, 1 South Cottages offers guests wonderful accommodation in a delightful setting.

Thorpeness is a coastal village resting between Aldeburgh and Southwold. The village is known for its historic windmill and expansive pebble beach and offers a selection of attractions including boat hire at Thorpeness Mere and selection of eateries, while you can stock up on essentials at the nearby convenience stores found at Aldeburgh. Within easy reach of the village is the popular coastal town of Aldeburgh where you can find further attractions and amenities such as another beach, independent shops and coastal walks.

It was ideally situated with the beach, meare, cafe and pub all close by. It was clean, warm and welcoming on our arrival, with a very nice welcome pack. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to book again. Thank you.

It's perfect for us and dog! Very cosy, and warm [despite storm Darraugh] well equipped, and a fantastic location close to the beach and quiet. Both visits provided real R&R from work tension. Thank you for the lovely welcome basket on the kitchen table. Bed very comfortable and lovely hotel level towels. Somehow the cleaning service forgot to put a pillow case on one of the pillows, and the pillow protector looked a little marked- which was not so nice to see- but as we only needed one pillow each that was fine. [i put it on top of the wardrobe.] We loved the christmas tree and associated decoration in the sitting room, that made it feel welcoming too. The stairs are steep, we knew this, and we are very mobile so no issue for us. We were pleased they had been attended to since our last visit, and were more sturdy and had even been carpeted. The Latter did make the treads even narrower but as I said we have no mobility issues with feet, hips or knees. I think if we did, either we'd have to sleep in the gust room opposite the courtyard, or this would not be ideal place for us. We had one problem in that the drains in the bathroom were very smelly after a shower , but particularly with the bath. I took a bath just once on last day. As I sank into the warm bubbles, an awful smell came up through the overflow. I just could not stay in it; it was awful. If this is a new problem i am certain someone will sort the trap out, but it was a pretty bad smell and needs attention asap! Overall a super little cottage, and an enjoyable stay.

Comfortable and characterful with pretty much everything you might need. It has good walking from the door, decent wifi, and a very comfortable bed. Parking outside at this time of year (October) was not a problem. A couple of points, however. The listing could make it clearer that the stairs also have narrow treads which may cause problems for those with balance issues or creaky knees (at the moment this is buried in the detailed text). The lack of cleaning equipment (hoover, floor mop) made it difficult to leave the property as I would usually like (dog hair is hard to remove with a dustpan and brush). Finally, a few more mugs, a colander, and a couple of baking trays would finish the kitchen equipment nicely.
