The property's garden and parkland access are highlights, as is the welcoming atmosphere and attention to detail in the decor. It's an ideal retreat for families and friends, with special mentions of its suitability for festive gatherings and the provision of a welcome hamper.

There is no specific mention of cleanliness in the reviews, so it is not possible to provide an accurate score for this category.

The location is highly praised for its proximity to attractions like Flatford mill, the convenience for dog walking, and the easy access to local cuisine. Its situation in a quiet village with surrounding countryside adds to the appeal.

The comfort of the property is frequently mentioned, with guests noting the cosy beds, open fire, and the overall warmth and charm of the cottage. However, some guests noted the layout of the bedrooms and sound travel as minor issues.

Facilities are generally well-received, with the property being described as well-equipped and comfortable. However, there are comments about the need for blackout blinds and a mention of broken blinds, suggesting some room for improvement in maintenance.

Guests appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as the welcome hamper and Christmas tree. While these gestures are warmly received, it should be noted that such amenities are subject to availability and are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

Located in the pretty village of Higham within the heart of Dedham Vale, The Old Post Office is a beautifully characterful 17th century timber-framed cottage and a rare opportunity to stay in a property immortalised by John Constable in his painting 'The Stour Valley'. After a day exploring the surrounding Suffolk countryside, return to exposed beams and gently uneven oak floors, and curl up in front of the fireplace. Sleeping up to eight guests across four bedrooms, including a separate annexe, it is perfectly suited to families or groups, with a well-behaved dog in one of Suffolk’s most picturesque and storied landscapes.

Dating from the 1600s, this beautifully characterful Suffolk cottage is rich in original feature. Step inside, the well-equipped kitchen with large range-style cooker and American style fridge freezer, to the beautifully beamed sitting room where a wood burning stove sits within an original fireplace and invites slow evenings together. A dining room, styled with curated pieces and seating for eight, sets the scene for shared meals and long conversation, while a separate family room offers a quieter retreat for reading or relaxed moments away from the main living spaces. Upstairs, three of the four bedrooms are arranged across the first floor, where original flooring and soft character details continue the sense of heritage throughout. The master bedroom features a 5’ King-size bed with access through to bedroom two, which also offers a 5’ King-size bed and built-in storage, while bedroom three provides a 4’6” double bed. A family bathroom with bath and overhead shower serves these rooms, while a fourth 5' King-size bedroom sits in a separate annexe overlooking the garden, complete with en-suite shower room, creating a peaceful and private space for guests seeking a little extra seclusion.

Outside, the enclosed rear garden offers a relaxed extension of the home, with a paved terrace, lawned areas, outdoor dining furniture and barbecue designed for easy alfresco living. After days spent exploring the surrounding Suffolk countryside, return to slow evenings in the garden, shared meals outdoors or quiet moments as the light fades. Sleeping up to eight guests and welcoming well-behaved dogs, with parking for three cars, this historic cottage is perfectly suited to families or groups seeking a restorative countryside escape where character, comfort and connection come naturally.

Great location for our family and dog. Lovely country just outside Colchester with lots of places serving high quality food and drink. I particularly appreciated the easy access to the lovely park via the gate at the bottom of the garden, so easy for early morning dog walks!
