About this property

This detached, well-presented cottage enjoys a beautiful setting in its own landscaped grounds, within the rural village of Wookey Hole near Wells. Offering comforting furnishings throughout, this charming dwelling is an ideal choice for families or two couples looking to escape normality and explore the luscious landscapes of Somerset. Discover the open-plan living space following a day of rambles, offering a cosy sitting area where you can kick back whilst the woodburner keeps you toasty. Take advantage of the amply-equipped kitchen during mealtimes, preparing your go-to dishes before setting the dining table to catch-up on the day. Retire to one of the bedrooms, both well-presented with super-king-size zip/link beds, offering flexibility as twins on request, while the master offers a feature roll-top bath where you can enjoy a lazy soak before bed. Outside there is a patio and lawned garden to the side and rear of the cottage, making a great place for the kids to let off some steam or even some alfresco dining. For the evenings away from the kitchen, venture into Wells where you can find a number of bars, cafés and restaurants, providing something for all budgets and palettes, as well as twice weekly farmers markets so that you can pick up local ingredients to enjoy at your self-catering cottage. The West Mendip Way, a 30-mile route over the Mendip hills - an area of outstanding natural beauty - from Weston-super-Mare to Wells, England's smallest city, goes right past Lilac Cottage. For a spot of history, visit Wells historic buildings, including the magnificent Wells Cathedral, the moated Bishop’s Palace and the 14th century Vicars Close, the oldest inhabited residential street in Europe. Nearby are the fascinating Wookey Hole Caves, where you can explore the caves, while there are also plenty of educational sources on Dinosaurs, Minerals and Rocks, Paper Making and the Stone Age, fun for all the family! Immerse yourself in local culture at the Somerset markets, indulging yourself with artisan food, antiques, vintage and retro wares, hand-made gifts and artworks. Return each evening to the comfort and warmth of Lilac Cottage.

Wells is known for being England's smallest city and is named after the springs that bubble up in the grounds of Bishop's Palace with its famous moat. Within the city you will also find a grand 12th century cathedral, as well as Vicars Close, where you will find the oldest complete medieval street in Europe and the market square offers an array shops and eateries. The surrounding area is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers plenty of outdoor opportunities, including caving and rock climbing, and for road biking and mountain biking, while walkers can simply explore on foot.

If we are back in Somerset we would definitely return

We were there for the second week of January, a beautiful bright, sunny & freezing cold 7 days, but inside we were warm & cosy. Everything was spotless, plenty of quality equipment & utensils in the kitchen. Only regret - we couldn't make use of the garden, so we'd live to return in warmer days. Our communications with the owners was excellent.

The weather was horrible but the Cottage was fabulous and cosy to come back to each evening. The garden which was enclosed was enjoyed by our dog, I would however note that if you had a very small dog they might be able to slip through the gates. Could also do with some oven trays but we would definitely recommend a stay at Lilac cottage and we hope to come back next year ourselves.
