About this property

Markham Cottage sits in a pleasant position with uninterrupted views over to Chesil Beach and Weymouth Bay, situated next door to the owner’s property.

This modern renovated cottage is all on one level, just with a couple of steps into the front door and a couple of steps in the bedroom/bathroom area. The spacious living kitchen dining area is open plan and, curl up with a good book and relax. The perfectly placed terrace means you can sit back and enjoy the view whilst absorbing the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding countryside.

Being only a few minutes' drive from the heart of Weymouth, and its golden sandy beach, where all the restaurants, shops and amenities you may desire are situated. There are beautiful scenic walks along the promenade, where the tasty fish and chips are to be eaten on the harbour side and local ice creams to be sampled. Markham Cottage is positioned between Weymouth and Wyke Regis, which provides easy access to Chesil Beach, Portland, and surrounding Dorset attractions. West Bay, Abbotsbury and Lulworth Cove all within an easy 30-minute drive and offering spectacular picture postcard scenery along the way.

Just a pretty perfect cottage for a couple’s romantic retreat or a couple of friends to come and enjoy a Dorset holiday.

Wyke Regis sits on the south western side of Weymouth and the northern edges of Portland harbour whilst reaching as far as the back of Chesil beach and The Fleet. 2 miles from the centre of Weymouth. There are local shops, cafés and restaurants including The famous Crab House café, with it’s own Oyster beds on the doorstep. The National Sailing school, an Olympic legacy, offers a wide variety of water sports and is just 2 miles away on the edge of Portland harbour. The Fleet lagoon that runs between Wyke Regis and Chesil beach is an important area for wildlife and there are many species of birds to be seen in the area. Chesil beach is also a renown spot for fishing. The Fleet is probably most famous for being the testing ground for Barnes Wallis’s bouncing bomb, immortalised in the film the Dam Busters. Wyke Regis is the perfect location from which to explore many of Dorset’s most iconic locations on the Jurassic coast.

Just a few things that could be better are the beds have a very thin mattress which we didn’t find comfortable. There’s not enough storage like draws in both bedrooms which even for one week with only two of us wasn’t great. The bathroom has no window so by the time you’ve had a shower you feel like you’ve been in a steam room aswell.Very noisy fan in there that’s useless.

We liked the spacious living room and open kitchen, the great view over Weymouth and to the coast. The double bed was a bit narrow, but we slept well. We didn't like the very small bathroom with the very small washbasin. Unfortunately there was no shelf or other space in the bathroom to place the bath utensils. Therefore you have to improvise a bit. The cottage is o.k. for two. With more people it could be difficult to store clothes and luggage. Maintanace could be a bit better: defect light bulbs in corridor and hub over the stove, discharged battery in the nice clock and the electric kettel seemed to be not descaled for long time. Cleaniness was very good for the whole cottage, except for the sink which was not polished at all. Merkham Cottage is an ideal point to discover (the south of) Dorset. There are a lot of attractions nearby. But we would not choose again.

Everything we could need was provided in the cottage from a coffee and teapot, through to full size fridge freezer and entertainment. Hosts were very helpful and contactable. The only negative comment I have is that the double bed in the main bedroom is broken. It is propped up with a book and the mattress is far too thin for the base it is on. We both ended up sleeping in the single bed for a break as we were suffering from sore hips from the bed. I have fed this back to the owner. I questioned Sykes staff about the bed situation after reading and earlier review. I was told the bed had been sorted so travelled happily. This was not the case. It didn't spoil our holiday too much though.
