Sympathetically converted from a former barn, it has been very well equipped to offer comfortable holiday accommodation for up to six people. This is an ideal base for exploring both Dorset’s lovely coastline and beautiful countryside.
Ancient Bridport, 2 miles, has Saxon origins and was once an important rope-making centre. The amount of space needed to make rope is said to account for the town’s exceptionally broad streets, now the base for two popular weekly markets. There is a good choice of shops, a cinema and a new sports centre. A mile further on, West Bay has a harbour where fishing trips and rowing boat hire are available. The stunning Chesil Beach runs from here and stretches 17 miles along the coast to Weymouth. There are several other good beaches within easy reach of The Old Piggeries – at Charmouth, Seatown and, slightly further, at the charming and popular seaside resort of Lyme Regis, which offers plenty of attractions for visitors.
Walkers can enjoy meandering country footpaths passing through tranquil countryside, or more energetic hikes on the coastal path along the tops of towering cliffs, where the views are breathtaking. There are plenty of good country inns to offer refreshment. Inland, there are many picturesque villages to explore, with their pretty thatched roofs and interesting histories. Near the little town of Chard is Hornsbury Mill with its rural life displays, and beautiful Forde Abbey and gardens. Nearby is Crewkerne, an old-fashioned market town, with many bookshops and second-hand shops to explore. Dorchester is 7 miles. Golf and fishing nearby. Riding school 5 miles. Shops 2 miles.

We booked because of the location and private swimming pool which in themselves were fine. The pool was indoors, warm, and ideal for children. The living area was large, bright and airy and well supplied with an L sofa and chairs. The downsides were:1: The cleanliness wasn't as expected. (Dried urine on one toilet seat for example.2: The beds were extremely uncomfortable for all four adults in the party3: Electricity wasn't included and paid for by a £1 coin slot meter. This seemed to eat coins like mad. I suspect it was the hot water was run from this, but we had no control over when it was on, and the temperature coming out of the taps was scalding. We did little cooking, 5 washes in the washing machine, no drying, no dishwasher and still spent £100 for the 2 weeks! (getting coins isn't easy either).Towels were also not included, but we didn't consider this a significant drawback. We incidentally had a burst pipe in the loft above the eating area, but credit to the owners, they attended quickly, put a bowl in the loft under the pipe, and a plumber fixed it the next day.

At The Old Piggeries there was nothing not to like. Although our week was often wet and stormy it didn't matter as the house felt so welcoming. The pool was warm and it was lovely to be able to have it to ourselves whenever we wanted.

Very good cottage with so much room inside and out. The pool is an added bonus. It is very well equipped with everything we needed. The only negative was the pound in the slot meter as it seemed to use about seven pounds a day even though we were out a lot and didn`t do much cooking. I took £25 in coins and had to go to the bank in Bridport for more.Lots of narrow roads but we soon got used to them as there was little traffic.
