Trimstone Manor is tucked away down a very narrow lane, so drivers should approach with caution and take their time. The location is idyllic and probably hasn't changed in hundreds of years. It is superb for exploring the surrounding area, situated a short drive from Ilfracombe. The Trimstone Manor Staff were very welcoming, responsive and friendly. We booked a cottage and did not use the Hotel facilities or dining areas so cannot comment on them. We booked the 3 bedroom Granary Cottage which was much larger and roomier than we were expecting and would be ideal for a large family. The accommodation is all on one level (with plenty of room for a wheelchair/walking aid if needed) once you have navigated the 3 steps up to the property which was important for us. The cottage was clean and the bed linen crisp. The bedroom curtains are unlined so if you are sensitive to early morning daylight, you might want to bring an eye mask. The mattresses are basic but fine for a weeks stay. The furniture and décor is dated but it was all in good order and robust. There was plenty of comfortable seating and a large, solid, 8 seater dining table. Mobile signal was, as you would expect in a very rural area, patchy at best. The free wifi was ok but slow in the evenings when I guess more guests are using it. The TV included Netflix and freeview channels. The kitchen facilities were adequately equipped but if you want a sharp knife, bring one with you (although that’s true of all self-catering kitchens) Great dishwasher and ok washing machine, with airers and ironing board. The heating system exceeded expectations, keeping the cottage cosy on a few damp and chilly mornings - impressive given the property’s size. Hot water was abundant and reliable throughout our stay. Hot towel rails in both bathrooms were also welcome (although anyone with small children might want to turn them off). The shared, heated (lovely and warm) indoor pool was a bonus. However, the sauna and tennis courts are no longer available (although their website has not been updated to reflect this). The extensive gardens are beautiful but are treading a very fine line between cultivation and a naturalistic style but perhaps straying slightly into benign neglect round the edges. Overall, the property serves as a charming, peaceful retreat (the peace broken only occasionally by the resident peacocks who were a bit of a star turn). However, it is clear that the estate is in need of some care and investment. Maintaining a 17th century manor house and its auxiliary buildings is undoubtedly a Herculean challenge, both financially and in terms of labour. Unfortunately, the estate seems to have seen its last visible major renovation or financial uplift some 30 to 40 years ago. While it retains an undeniable grace and character, it is succumbing to a gentle but noticeable decline. In summary, Trimstone Manor combines charm, character, and an idyllic and enviable location, making it a delightful base for discovering the treasures of North Devon. While it does need some rejuvenation to restore its full glory, it remains a wonderful spot to retreat and explore. We had a lovely holiday and hope to return in coming years.Highlights for us were: Marwood Hill Gardens, National Trust Arlington Court, RHS Rosemoor, The Beaches Restaurant in Woolacombe (book early!) The Proper Marmalade Shop and the Dinky Deli (both in Ilfracombe) are well worth a visit!
