    About this property

This comfortable cottage is situated on the Pendeen Lighthouse site, on a majestic granite headland. It provides a hall, double bedroom with limited sea views, single bedroom, sitting room with sea views, kitchen, dining room and bathroom.

In association with Trinity House, we are proud to present Argus Cottage at Pendeen Lighthouse.
Argus is one of two holiday cottages available at the lighthouse and has a dramatic location on a granite headland on the North Cornwall Coast within a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The South West Coast path passes round the headland, passing through part of Cornwall's oldest mining areas. The lighthouse lies six miles north of Land's End and two miles from St Just. The lighthouse was established in 1900, electrified in 1926 and automated in 1994.
You may be lucky enough to spot seals on the rocks below the lighthouse headland, as well as a variety of seabirds. With banks of seasonal pink thrift and golden gorse, the headland is a perfect location to watch the sun setting over the Atlantic.

"It’s a lovely cottage, and generally well-equipped, Diane looks after it very well, and we love it, but the cottage itself has a few drawbacks: 1. The dishwasher doesn’t always get things clean. We had to rinse everything before putting them in. It’s a shame you could not fit in a large sized one… 2. There isn’t enough cutlery especially knives! 3. Can we *please* have hooks on doors in bedrooms and the kitchen for dressing gowns and aprons? 4. We hated putting all rubbish to go to landfill/incinerator and not being able to separate out things for recycling. Can you please allow this? 5. The bin in the kitchen is badly designed so it was a struggle to get the full bag out, as the lip gets in the way. I recommend a Brabantia one - more expensive but easier to use. 6. This website is annoying- it keeps flashing at me as I type!"

"The stay was amazing Dianna was perfect host and made us very welcome ! Place was clean and tidy with plenty of space and beautiful views !! only down side couldn’t leave the dog for a hour or so to go shopping or a meal out even though we brought a cage for her so couldn’t case any trouble which left us restricted. But overall 10/10"

"Argus is a truly magical coastal cottage with uninterrupted sea views in two directions. You will definitely need a car as it’s well over a mile’s walk to the bus stop. There’s a little bit of noise from Sole Bay cottage next door (I think their kitchen is next to the Argus bedrooms) but nothing awful. The cottage is well equipped and maintained. You don’t get many TV channels if that sort of thing is important to you."

"Fabulous cottage in an amazing location. We went for our 50th anniversary and it was perfect in every way. Comfy bed, very well equipped, nicely furnished."
    Confirmed Guest ‐ 9 Mar 2022
"Fabulous location clean, welcoming and luxurious. With a touch of the wild, isolated away from the world’s problems and terrors. We did not want to leave. The surrounding area offers so much to see and do, and the countryside the opportunity to walk and breathe in the silence. We particularly loved the Black night sky allowing us to see the stars and spot the constellations. The light pollution in the rest of the country prevents us seeing this fantastic view anywhere else we have been."

"Lovely cottage in a fab location. We stayed 1st-4th March, during this time storm Freya made her appearance which was very dramatic! The cottage was immaculately clean and was very well equipped. I would like to thank rural retreats also for substituting ales instead of wine in the hamper as we're not wine drinkers. I'd also like to thank Kirsty for bringing us the extra heating whilst the storm was blowing as we couldn't keep the boiler lit, (luckily it calmed before bed and we didn't need it after all). I would definitely recommend this cottage and we will be planning a return visit here sometime in the future."

"Almost don't want to write this review: Had high expectations after reading other reviews of this property and very happy to say that these were exceeded. The location is stunning, wild, rugged, raw, exposed and perfect for walking as much or as little as you like (Boat Cove is 5 mins walk from the Cottage), great vantage points to spot many sea birds and also swimming seals. The property itself is lovely: Warm, cosy, very clean. We were very comfortable there, & we self catered with ease. Diane was very welcoming on arrival and the hamper was generous and we supplemented by purchases from the local farmers market, local store, local fish, and vegetables from the community farm nr St Just. When Diane rang to arrange access and asked me if I wanted red or white wine I knew is was going to be a good break away :-)...It is only a 20min hike from the cottage to the Pendeen Village, we did this is horrendous weather but was exhilarating nonetheless to find more than one pub (Curry Night Saturdays) and good corner shop and a Chippy that did Breakfast Baps as well as full range of what you'd expect. Easy journey in car, or walk it if you are wanting to explore, to St Ives, St Just & many more hidden coves and beaches around the area. If you need to clear out the cobwebs then a walk along the cliffs to the many nearby Tin Mines will do that just, stop into the NT property for coffee and a wonderful welcome. Anyway DO NOT GO AND BOOK IT AS WE WANT TO GO AGAIN!!!"

"A superb place to stay with our little dog, we wished it was longer really relaxing. The hamper was a great treat. Only a couple of little dents - There should be a few more books for men, The radio/CD in the dining room did not work and the fire plan on the back of the door in bedroom 1 was not quite right the bedroom and lounge had swapped places. Nothing that spoilt our stay and I ordered a brochure so that we can pick our next holiday with Rural Retreats."

"First Class accommodation etc.Only one concern, the people in House #2 have 4 cars, well, 2 cars, and 2 Land Rovers, which they park next to the Fog Horn building, right in front of the view out to sea. It looks very unsightly. Not only that, behind one of the parked vehicles, which didn't move all week, are four 4x4 tyres, just leaning on the wall of the lighthouse perimeter. It looks like a dumping ground! Not good. This is our 6th visit to Pendeen, and the first time it has happened. Also, #2 seem to be running a chimney repair business from their accommodation. Surely Trinity House can not be content with this? I am not happy with that aspect."

Housekeeper was very helpful.Wood lice are a problem. They were found in every room and found two in the small bed. They just took the edge off a lovely holiday. It probably needs professional attention - don't think it would be within the capabilities of a housekeeper to deal with. Would like to return when Trinity House have sorted out the problemBecause of this have reduced rating from excellent to good."

"We have stayed in this cottage many times. We love the location and have always found it a very comfortable place to stay. We were a little disappointed this time by the refurbishment which has taken place since our last stay. The cottage was not as cosy and comfortable as before. Whilst being very 'modern' we didn't feel the redecoration was in keeping with the type of building. The furnishings were very neutral and didn't reflect the history of the cottage. For example, the 'seaman's chest' used as a coffee table has been replaced with twee, flimsy tables and lighthouse pictures replaced with 2nd rate hotel type prints. The very trendy grey fittings in the kitchen made it seem very dark and the light fittings were really awful! We would be interested to know whether this refurbishment was undertaken by Trinity House or Rural Retreats? Thankfully the location hasn't changed and the standard of housekeeping remains good."

My only very small criticism is that it would have been nice to have an outdoor seating area where we could enjoy the stunning views and the back yard wasn't a pleasant place to sit."

Once a dog has been in a property the smell lingers no matter how well it is cleaned. "Second visit, a fantastic week. Gales, rain, sleet, hail made it an exciting and unusual week but enough sun to walk to Botallack and the Crown Mines on my 50th birthday. Cracking meal at the Tinners Arms, Zennar. Also had a great taste explosion at the Victoria Inn. Thanks for presenting the place so beautifully. The fog horn has been a wonderful, pretty constant companion which we'll rather miss. Heather's café in Pendeen is a heaven when you're walking on a stormy day. This is a great place and the people around are friendly. We can't wait to come back! JS, Epsom"

"A fantastic 10 days in an amazing part of Cornwall! Cottage cosy and comfortable. The fog horn became familiar both day and night. Highlights of our stay Portheras beach (was never more than a few people there), Pendeen Village (especially Heather's Coffee Shop). Geevor Mine, Botallock Mine (free access). Quaint and the moorlands in general; Minack Theatre and St Ives, where the open studios/galleries for the festival were especially interesting etc. Hope to return with some of the family - they'd love it here too. "Our sixth Pendeen Lighthouse stay, but first at Argus Cottage. Beautiful views. The weather was varied from sunbathing on the beach to rain and strong winds! Fog horn, sounding good as ever, Lovely walking from Porthairno to Cape Cornwall (the 300 bus was very useful). Watched the Trinity House helicopter landing on Longships Lighthouse which was amazing. Geevar Tin Mine was very interesting as was Cape Cornwall Coastwatch station, definitely worth a visit. Best of all were two evenings watching large pods of dolphin's right outside the lighthouse for a couple of hours, lots of leaping - AMAZING. Also seen the seal, choughs, kestrel and lots of sea birds. Just stunning. N&M, Somerset"

"A spectacular location - but you can see that already. So some trips to St Michael's Mount is a must - depending on the times, try and get a boat across early and walk back just as the Hoards Head over when the causeway opens. Walk down to Cape Cornwall is a must - allow 6-7 hours to have time to explore the mines and don't miss the one down a steep slope to the sea. All in all a wonderful few days. K&R, Surrey"
