Nestled amidst the picturesque Pendeen Peninsula, this family-friendly haven offers awe-inspiring views of the dramatic coastline, making it a truly idyllic escape for nature enthusiasts and coastal lovers alike. This is ‘Poldark’ country; you can imagine the smugglers at night coming into the coves in their small boats, hiding their contraband.
As you step inside The Captains House, you’ll be greeted by a cosy and inviting interior, thoughtfully designed to provide a comfortable stay for you and your loved ones. The accommodation features spacious bedrooms, ensuring a restful night’s sleep after adventurous days exploring the region. The well-equipped kitchen allows you to prepare delightful meals for your family and friends, or perhaps even indulge in some local Cornish delicacies. One of the highlights of The Captains House is its beautiful garden, where you’ll find a wooden gate that opens directly onto the famous Southwest Coast Path, this pathway provides endless opportunities for exhilarating hikes and leisurely walks, revealing stunning vistas of the surrounding sea and rugged cliffs.
After a day of exploration, you can unwind and relax in the wood-fired hot tub located in the garden, imagine soaking in warm, bubbling water, surrounded by nature’s beauty, and overlooking the sparkling sea - it’s a truly rejuvenating experience that will leave you feeling refreshed. If the weather is bad, sit in the conservatory and snuggle up, watch the fantastic night skies, play one of the board games or read a good book.
As for things to do in the area, Pendeen and its surroundings offer a wealth of activities and attractions. The historic Pendeen lighthouse, perched on the cliffs, will give you an insight into its maritime history. The area is surrounded by mining heritage, and you can visit Geevor Tin Mine or Botallack mines featured in Poldark. Portheras Cove is ½ mile away, and Portherras Beach (a secluded and dog-friendly cove perfect for picnics and paddling) is one of the many beaches in the area. If you travel further you will come to Porthcurno beach, a stunning secluded beach and how to the famous outdoor Minack theatre, carved into the cliffs. The nearest town is St Just full of artisan shops, galleries restaurants, pubs, and cafes, for a full day out head to Lands’ End just over 10 miles away.
Two dogs are welcome (but please keep off the furniture!) and there is a designated doggy shower outside as well as dog hairdryer.
The hot tub is emptied and cleaned before each arrival. Full instructions for filling and heating can be found in the welcome folder.

This house has the most breathtaking views you will ever see ( especially from the hot tub ) Well equipped with everything you need to stay with a big family. A 3 minute drive or 10 minute walk will take you to the spar shop , fish and chip shop next door. Another minute walk down you will find a lovely village pub serving food food through the day ( lovely home cooked curries are amazing) A ten minute walk from the house takes you to a lovely little beach, but it is a walk along the cliff side and can be a little tricky in places. We took our 5 year old grandchild and he managed it, but I wouldn’t recommend very young or anyone with mobility issues. Not so good point - would I call this house luxury.. no . It’s clean and has lovely character, but there is paint peeling off the walls and ceilings. When we arrived the bin was full so we had to put a weeks rubbish down the side, which became pretty smelly !. When we arrived there was a bag of smelly , wet green towels and a pump left inside the front door which had been used to clean out the hot tub.The drainage leaver wasn’t working so we had to pump out the water ourselves with the electric pump, which is ok, but not exactly luxury living. WeDid speak with the manager looking after the property, who apologised and said he would come and collect the towels that day and leave us some wood for the fire as an apology , but he never took it it till a few days later and no wood left. There were also loads of cobwebs full of dead flies I had to clean. This is a lovely house, but it needs a good clean and a lick of paint.

The house was lovely in a great location if you want peace and quiet. I would go back and I’d recommend to others wanting a bit of time off the beaten track. Whilst we loved the house and lots of lovely decor it did look like it needed a deep clean and I ended up giving it a good hoover whilst I was there - which was fine but I don’t mind a bit of housework! Kitchen was great but seemed like it needed a restock on glasses and cups - was fine for us as we had 3 kids with drinks bottles in tow but if there were 6 adults it would be a struggle - only one pint glass! Hot tub was great once we got it fired (it had not bubbles but the heat was lovely with the gorgeous views!) Parking was fine but you drive through a field to get to it and the neighbouring properties appeared to want to park to make it as difficult as possible for users of Captains House to get in and out of the space for this property - luckily we have rear cameras and a slim car but it was a tight squeeze some days! As a complete aside from the house, it was disappointing there was no pub or chip shop / place to get food within walking distance but that’s not owners fault (obviously) Spar shop was good but limited. Views, space and walks were amazing and I loved the birdwatching and sea views - particularly loved the black bird that tapped the window every morning! It was like he wanted to tell us to get up!

This is a lovely house in a lovely position and the owner couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful. The house could do with some attention to fine details and more TLC.Although it wasn't open during our visit it should be brought to the attention of potential renters that from the first of April there is a busy and functioning camp site to the rear of the property that one drives through for access.
