It doesn’t get much better or more central than this in Fowey! Fowey’s boat sprinkled harbour and the lovely Readymoney Cove beach are very close by, offering much entertainment. This quaint, picturesque town enjoys an wonderful collection of independent local shops and boutiques, harbourside cafes, pubs and restaurants. The pretty harbour is flanked by fourteenth century blockhouses and the water is busy with commercial and leisure traffic. There are regular celebrations of the life of its very famous resident, Daphne du Maurier. The Fowey Aquarium delights little ones as do the boat trips and watersports on the river. Fowey lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by lush, stunning countryside brimming with tidal creeks, rolling fields and rugged cliffs. You can easily visit Looe, Mevagissey, Polperro, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.

Throughout its many living spaces The Goose House boasts a wonderful blend of old meets new. You will discover superb period features including fireplaces, high ceilings and original wooden floor mingling with contemporary furnishings and a thoroughly modern colour palette. There are two main reception rooms and an additional snug, all offering feature fireplaces, sumptuous furnishings, sash windows and French doors. They ooze stately elegance and boasts the most intoxicating estuary views that will make your hearts sing. The snug enjoys a huge smart television where you can cosy up with Netflix on the modern corner sofa. The two reception rooms are refined, serene and their fireplaces and ornate mirrors add a touch of vintage sophistication. The generous modern kitchen is the heart of the home with its Aga, central island, vintage pine dresser and fabulous circular, marble topped dining table. It is bright and airy, drowned in natural light. The glass sunroom is a fabulous addition, another exceptional dining area with spectacular estuary views and dining under the stars.

The Goose House enjoys five huge bedrooms with spectacular vistas, beautifully dressed cloud-like beds where you will drift off to sleep along with the harmonious sounds of the estuary. The master bedroom offers an ensuite shower room and there are two other family bathrooms. Four single trundle beds are available on request if you don’t quite have enough room.

Outside, the terrace enjoys a unique position overlooking and leading down to the town. There are loungers, a barbecue and firepits for chilly evenings. You can enjoy pre-dinner drinks watching the water activity and take the path down to a small beach or for a waterside stroll into town. There is off road parking for six cars.

The Goose House is located the heart of Fowey with fabulous views of the harbour and river. Its unique, special spot has to be one of the best in Fowey. Fowey enjoys a splendid range of boutiques and independent shops, harbourside cafes, charming pubs and fabulous restaurants. If you are a Daphne du Maurier fan, you are in for a treat at the Literacy Centre. Her work, along with many other authors, is celebrated at the town’s Fowey Festival of Words and Music in May. Another fantastic event is the Fowey Royal Regatta which is held in August. The Fowey estuary is a glorious sight with Fowey on one side at the mouth of the River Fowey and the gorgeous town of Polruan on the other. There are regular passenger ferries to and from Polruan and a car ferry to Boddinick. You will enjoy the busy river traffic from the terrace of Esplanade Retreat. The ferry house was originally the du Maurier family home and later the home of Angela du Maurier, Daphne’s sister.

As well as being incredibly pretty, Fowey enjoys a rich history. During the Second World War, Fowey was the centre for air-sea rescue and one of the places from which the D-Day invasions were launched. St Catherine’s Point is on the Fowey side of the harbour entrance where it functioned as a lighthouse in medieval times. St Catherine’s Castle below was built during the reign of Henry viii to defend the harbour entrance. It is accessible when walking from the pretty Readymoney Cove. On Fore Street you will find the Old House of Foye, a medieval house built in 1430. It is now a shop but the walls, beamed interior and fireplace are pretty much the same. During the summer, Fowey Town Hall’s museum and small aquarium are open.

There are some amazing sandy beaches close by. The town’s Readymoney Cove is just a short walk from the house. Par Sands, close to the village of Par and four miles from St Austell, boasts a huge expanse of sand backed by pretty dunes. Polkerris Beach magically combines an idyllic sandy cove and stunning coastline with an array of entertaining watersports. You can stand up paddleboard, learn to sail and windsurf, explore the coastline in a kayak or simply enjoy exploring the rock pools and building sandcastles. There is a wonderful beach restaurant and waterside pub. The National Trust’s dreamy Lantic Bay is a great spot for paddling and for a picnic.

You can take a ferry to the delightful tourist town of Mevagissey which is within a unesco Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is another working harbour, nestled on the unspoilt dramatic Cornish coastline. Mevagissey boasts an aquarium, museum, seafood restaurants, atmospheric pubs, watersports, beautiful gardens, cycle trails and much more. You can walk from the town to the stunning Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Restormel Castle lies by the River Fowey near Lostwithiel. One of the four chief Norman castles of Cornwall, it is notable for its perfectly circular design. Once a luxurious residence of the Earl of Cornwall, it was ruined by the 16th century and is now under the supervision of the English Heritage. It is another beautiful picnic spot.
