Visit the fine parish church in nearby Morwenstow, known for its long-serving and eccentric 19th-century vicar, the Reverend Hawker. The cleric used timbers from shipwrecks on this wild coast to construct Hawker’s Hut, now the smallest building in the care of the National Trust. After a breezy walk along the rugged cliffs, drop into the 13th-century pub for a reviving brew. Bude (5 miles) is a magnet for surfers drawn to its Atlantic rollers, but for a quieter swim, head for calmer waters in the famous sea pool on Summerleaze Beach. Hire canoes, kayaks and pedalo for a gentle trip down the historic Bude Canal or go for a stroll or bike ride along the towpath. The Castle Bude has a fascinating heritage centre, along with exhibitions, galleries and a cafe.
