Aldrich Cottage, set in the tranquil Somerset countryside, offers a peaceful retreat with comfortable, spacious bedrooms and en-suite facilities. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches like welcome packs, although some felt the communal areas were snug for larger groups. The property's cleanliness and maintenance received mixed feedback, with some concerns about pests and outdated amenities. Nonetheless, the cottage's charm and location make it a favourable choice for those seeking a quiet getaway near attractions like Bath and Bristol.
Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with several guests finding the cottage clean and comfortable, while others reported issues with pests and cleanliness in certain areas. The presence of dead flies and a need for better upkeep in some rooms have been noted.
The location is highly praised for its beauty and tranquillity, with the cottage being ideally situated for exploring local tourist attractions. The peaceful surroundings contribute to a relaxing stay, although some guests noted limited access to the estate's grounds.
The bedrooms are consistently described as comfortable and spacious, but the living areas are considered too small for the maximum number of guests. Seating and dining arrangements for a full house are noted as inadequate, affecting the overall comfort.
Facilities are adequate, with en-suite bathrooms and essential kitchen amenities. However, guests have mentioned issues with maintenance, such as problematic showers and insufficient kitchen supplies for a full house. The presence of thoughtful welcome gifts is noted, although the lack of basics like tea and coffee was a drawback for some.
Several guests were delighted by the welcome packs, which included items like wine, chocolates, and fruit, adding a touch of thoughtfulness to their stay. However, it's important to note that such gifts are a complimentary gesture and may not be a consistent offering for all stays.
Radstock 2.7 miles. This well-appointed cottage is situated in the beautiful and peaceful grounds of Ammerdown Park, a short distance from the centre of Radstock. The cottage offers ample family accommodation and makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. With a bedroom on the ground floor with an en-suite and separate shower room, the accommodation is suited for those with limited mobility. There is a lovely kitchen with a dining area which leads through to a comfortable sitting area. Completing this floor is the handy utility room which houses the laundry facilities. Upstairs are the remaining three bedrooms, which also have en-suites and enjoy views out to the centre's amazing landscaped gardens and walled orchard. The cottage has its own private patio area where you can dine alfresco with the accompaniment of bird song. If you can tear yourself away from this beautiful setting you will find plenty of choices for days out in the area. Just ten miles away lies the historic city of Bath, a world heritage site, with its Roman Baths, spa, stunning Georgian buildings, parks, gardens, museums, theatres and restaurants. A short drive across the beautiful Mendip Hills will take you to the Bishops Palace and the uniquely scissor-vaulted cathedral in the city of Wells. Bradford-on-Avon (sometimes called miniature Bath) and the Kennet and Avon Canal are within easy reach as too are a number of National Trust and English Heritage properties, including Stonehenge, Stourhead House and Gardens, Lacock and Avebury. If you are looking for something closer to the cottage, there are heritage railways at Midsomer Norton, home of the Somerset & Dorset Heritage Railway Trust, and Cranmore, home of the East Mendip Railway, plus Radstock Museum, the nursery rhyme villages of Kilmersdon (Jack and Jill) and Mells (Little Jack Horner). Closer still, you can simply wallow in the tranquillity of Ammerdown.
The former coal-mining town of Radstock is a fantastic location filled with places of historic interest and surrounded by greenery. The Radstock Museum is an interesting day out with plenty of history about the area and the industrial past of the town. Two cycle routes run from the town and open up the surrounding wider countryside with routes running from Bath through to Frome. For walkers there are a number of options including the Miners and Black Mountain Trails where there is some stunning scenery on offer.
