About this property

The Cottage At Barrow Mead! When we visited this delightful cottage, we couldn't believe it is where it is and that you are actually IN Bath, well actually you're not, it's just that you are near the centre but you look out across open countryside!! As you pass through Bath, you suddenly find this little lane running alongside a school approximately 1/2 mile later and you're in the middle of nowhere, overlooking the rolling countryside of the southern Cotswolds. Hikers, birdwatchers and those in search of peace are just as likely to enjoy this super cottage as are those looking for culture, shops and a gastronomic experience, given its proximity to the heart of Bath, which is just 15 minutes away in the bus or car. Inside, the open plan ground floor gives a real sense of space which, with the woodburning stove, is just as welcoming and snug in winter as it is cool and inviting in summer. The private garden area overlooking the orchard and rolling countryside offers a super hideaway, while listening to birdsong. A little piece of heaven in Bath.

The beautiful, cosmopolitan city of Bath, a World Heritage Site, offers something for everyone. No matter the time of year you visit, you are likely to find events catering for all tastes, from the famous Christmas market to music, food and cultural festivals and world-class theatre productions on offer at the Theatre Royal. The streets are lined with every kind of restaurant and the wide range of quality bars and shops are sure to tempt. The stunning architecture of Georgian terraces are famous and a joy to behold, whilst a visit to the celebrated Roman Baths and wonderful abbey are a must whilst staying in this beautiful city. Should you tire of all on offer in the centre then there are many attractions located under an hour’s drive away; take a gentle boat trip along the Kennet and Avon Canal, explore the craft shops at local Frome or Bradford-on-Avon, or explore mystical Glastonbury.

There were numerous issues, toaster not working, kettle dirty and full of limescale, microwave dirty, front door mat filfthy, no hot water downstairs, we boiled kettle to do washing up. The biggest issue was that the property was just shabby and in dire need of a really good clean and some tlc. We did not bring this to the owners attention as there was nothing they could do to fix things without us having to move out. At no time did we feel comfortable during the stay.

The cottage has everything needful (and we did all our own cooking and spent quite a lot of time just chilling with our grown up children, so we really lived there, not treating it just as a bed for the night!) The absolute beauty of the place is its situation right on the edge of the city, but with the fields all around......To turn in the gateway and down the lane is to enter a different, peaceful world; a very welcome one as we are not city people! If we had a niggle, it would be the dormer window in our bedroom....the ceiling angle caught my husband on the head more times than he would care to remember.....fortunately no real damage done! Oh, and another middle-sized saucepan would be a great help....sometimed we cooked for two in huge pans. Thank you Louise and Matt for providing such a peaceful space.

However instructions on how to alter the heating ( it was too cold the first evening and blasted out heat in the bedrooms over night.) I couldn't fathom how to alter it and had to trouble the owner. Also keeping the log burner alight was problematical and you need to experiment with the settings. Again no instructions given. These are crucial in December. A tea cosy would be nice as would a glove for the log burner. This may seem nit-picking but would have made our visit perfect rather than just very good. I would stay here again and recommend to anyone wanting a stay near Bath.
