About this property

A self catering cottage in rural mid Sussex perfect for local walks and nearby gardens

Overlooking rolling open fields with lovely views south, the Old Dairy Cottage was once part of a working farm, yet it still retains that feel of rural farm life today with chickens in the yard, although the neighbouring fields frequently contain horses rather than cattle and sheep. For anyone looking for stabling for their horse this can be arranged with the owners.

The cottage is one mile north of the pretty mid Sussex village of Cuckfield, with its collection of traditional period buildings and a church that forms a centre piece for the village.

The Old Dairy Cottage will sleep between two and four. It is a one bedroom cottage, however, the living room does contain a sofa bed making the cottage suitable for a family with one or two young children. The main bedroom has a double bed and is a bright room taking advantage of the views to the south. The living room opens out onto a small private garden giving guests total privacy and a most relaxing outlook. The kitchen is well equipped and the bathroom has a full bath and a shower attachment above.

Cuckfield and beyond

Cuckfield is one of the prettiest villages in Sussex. Being so central in the county it is an ideal location to head east or west after of course having enjoyed everything that is so local. From the cottage there are many immediate walks offering outstanding views, including a footpath to the local pub! and possibly one of the most interesting walk is to take the footpath that passes underneath the imposing Ouse Valley Viaduct that crosses the Ouse Valley. It is just a couple of miles away. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty offering much for guests to enjoy. The Cuckfield Golf Centre is very close to Old Dairy Cottage, and welcomes visitors with daily green fees for 9 and 18 holes. Also within two miles Borde Hill Gardens have been described by Country Life magazine as one of the country’s truly great gardens. The gardens offer outstanding views across 200 acres of Grade II listed parkland and woodland.

Head north into the rolling Sussex Weald and you soon reach Ardingly Resevoir. It is a large expanse of natural water and an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are plentiful walks around the reservoir and for those who enjoy watersports it is a haven of activity for sailors, windsurfers and canoeists.

Access to and from this part of mid Sussex is excellent with other gardens such as Nymans and High Beeches just a few miles to the north and Wakehurst Place with its close association with Kew is within a fifteen minute drive to the east. With good communication links to Brighton, both the south coast and the South Downs are a short distance away while a day trip to London by rail is so easy from nearby Haywards Heath.

We loved the surroundings and the quiet rural environment. The location is perfect as it is easy to travel to London or Brighton by train (from Hawards Heath railway station). For golfers there is plenty of opportunities in Cuckfield or Haywards Heath. National trust houses and gardens nearby! Very kind and pleasant owners. In short worth while to book some time in this lovely cottage.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Old Dairy Cottage and found the owners very welcoming and thoughtful. Old Dairy Cottage is quiet and peaceful, with lovely views and great dog walks all around. The accommodation is spacious, and we appreciated the little fenced-in garden as we were traveling with our dog. We very much enjoyed our fortnight.
