About this property

The perfect oak cottage just right for rest and comfort, and being mid-way along the South Downs Way - ideal for long distance walking!

Set between the National Trust land at Sullington Warren and Heath Common, this is a beautifully appointed oak cottage amongst the trees and rhododendrons. The Clearing is in the grounds of the owners’ home yet offers totally private and exceptional accommodation for two people. With bi – fold doors to the front it is spacious, airy and superbly finished. The double bedroom overlooks the rear garden and has opening doors to a rear terrace. It is discreetly screened making a private area to sit out and relax.

There is an emphasis on quality here with a lot of thought given to guests’ comfort. There is a modern wetroom and with vaulted ceilings and oak beams throughout it’s a great place to return to at the end of each day. The cottage is just a mile from the downland village of Storrington and a mile from the South Downs. In fact Storrington is just about mid point along the length of the South Downs Way and it is a popular stop over for anyone undertaking a walk between Winchester and Eastbourne.

Storrington and beyond

Storrington is one of the many small market towns and villages that sit at the foot of the South Downs. The direct route to the Downs from The Clearing is via the lane that leads to the small church of St Mary’s in Sullington. The church dates from Saxon times with a Tower and Nave that is common in this area for that period. The route past the church to the South Downs Way above Sullington is certainly a lovely walk.

Chanctonbury Ring atop the Downs just two miles to the east was originally an Iron Age hill fort and following that a Roman temple was located there. It is most famous though for the ring of beech trees planted in 1760 by Charles Goring. The great storm of 1987 ripped through the Ring and, following a second storm in 1990 the Goring family replanted the trees and today Chanctonbury Ring is regaining its former glory. At 238 metres there are fine Downland views in each direction. Walk three miles to the south from Chanctonbury and you will reach Cissbury Ring which is one of the greatest prehistoric Iron Age hill forts in the country. On a clear day you can see the white cliffs towards Beachy Head to the east and the Isle of Wight and Chichester Cathedral spire to the west.

Parham House and Gardens just west of Storrington is a magnificent Elizabethan Country Home with beautiful formal gardens and open parkland. From the front of the house there are tremendous views to the Downs and at the top of the house you will find a stunning long gallery that is well worth seeing. During the year Parham hosts a number of special house and garden weekends.

It is only a short drive to the coast from The Clearing either heading due south to Worthing or taking the road over Bury Hill to either Littlehampton, Climping or Bognor Regis. The Clearing is also ideally placed for the many events in Sussex such as Goodwood, Fontwell Races and the annual festivals held in Arundel, Petworth, Brighton and Chichester.
