Petworth and beyond

This historic market town is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The house and its grounds are now owned and maintained by the National Trust.

The magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner. Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings.

Petworth is full of quaint houses and cottages, many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops, pubs and restaurants, so it makes the ideal place for a stroll at any time during your stay.

Attractive villages surround Petworth such as Fittleworth and Byworth to the east and Lodsworth and Lurgashall to the west. Journey further and you reach the market town of Midhurst nestling next to Cowdray Park. The Cowdray Estate is most famous for its polo club particularly in June and July when the polo set meet for the Gold Cup. The Cowdray ruins are also of note since they were important early Tudor courtiers’ palaces built from 1520 and form an impressive backdrop to Midhurst.

'St Mary's is a well equipped and comfortable flat, ideally located to explore the surrounding area and south coast'

A lovely two bedroomed apartment in Petworth. Very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. We couldn't have been made more welcome, nothing seemed to much trouble. Although it is not possible to park at the apartment, there is ample free overnight parking just a short walk away. We managed to park opposite the apartment quite easily for unloading and loading without any problems. Plenty of good varied restaurants and pubs nearby, would certainly recommend St. Mary's to anyone wishing to stay in this area of Sussex.

The housekeeper, could not have been more helpful or friendly. She was there to greet us at the appointed time and showed us round the flat explaining everything that needed to be explained. There were plenty of leaflets of places to go and even a take away menu from the Indian Restaurant next door from which there was no smell only heavenly food. When the housekeeper heard we needed a taxi, she arranged that for us too. The parking might have been a problem as it was a short walk away but Petworth is not big and, as we had to pass a pub on our way back, we thought it only polite that we popped in for a drink or too! The flat, although being on the main road was not noisy and although an old building, had been updated extremely well and was jolly comfortable too.
