Fernhurst and beyond

Fernhurst is a West Sussex village lying close to the borders of Surrey and Hampshire. It nestles comfortably midway between the North and South Downs and is a Northern Gateway within the South Downs National Park. The great looming hillside of Blackdown, which is the highest point in the South Downs National Park, sits high above the village. On a clear day you can see from Blackdown all the way across the Weald to the Devils Dyke above Brighton and even as far as Lewes in East Sussex. The views have inspired many for years including the renowned Alfred Lord Tennyson, writer of such epic works as Charge of the Light Brigade. The distinctive pine and heather covered slopes around Blackdown are a favourite walking spot and there are numerous wonderful trails and footpaths to follow.

Haslemere, a mere 3 miles from Oak Grove, is a quaint and charming market town, steeped in history and has a host of attractions for visitors to satisfy all interests. Experience first-hand the beautiful parks, gardens, and spectacular historic houses, or immerse yourself in culture at the many places of historical interest. Particularly fascinating is the award winning Haslemere Educational Museum, founded in 1888 and which contains wonderful collections of natural history and human history.

Drive 10 minutes and you will be in Midhurst, here you will find the grand Tudor ruins of Cowdray House one of England’s most important early Tudor houses. Visited by Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry viii, this impressive Tudor house was partially destroyed by fire in 1793. Its magnificent ruins are set in the stunning landscape of Cowdray Park, in the heart of the South Downs National Park, which is well known for the Polo held from spring onwards and in particular the Gold Cup events which are hosted each summer.

A little further and you will reach the historic town of Petworth which is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House completed in 1696 and the deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The House and its grounds are now owned and maintained by the National Trust and the magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner. The town is full of quaint houses and cottages many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following a visit to the house.

With Goodwood less than half an hour's drive from Oak Grove you are perfectly placed to visit Goodwood House, the home of the Earl and Countess of March, which combines the glamour of a great English country house with the warmth of a family home. It also provides a dramatic setting for one of the most significant private art collections in the country. You can also take the opportunity to attend one of the many events at the Goodwood Motoring circuit such as the Festival of Speed or the Revival meeting.
