About this property

Tranquil and spacious holiday cottage surrounded by dairy pastures, yet only a short trip to Goodwood, Chichester and Arundel

An oasis of tranquility surrounded by a working dairy farm in beautiful Sussex countryside. From the moment you turn down the drive to Harbinger you leave the hustle of 21st Century life behind, and can look forward to a comfortable stay in spacious, light filled surroundings. The living room is filled with sunlight on bright days as it has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the terrace and garden outside. Taking advantage of the views onto the terrace and the garden are two of Charles and Ray Eames' iconic Lounge Chairs. The perfect place to sit and contemplate the views, with a cup of tea or a drink to hand. The sitting end of the living room has a wood burning stove to add comfort when it's chilly outside, although the efficient underfloor heating keeps the cottage evenly warm. In the centre of the room is a dining table with plenty of space for relaxing meals in after a long day out exploring the locality. The kitchen is well equipped with high quality appliances including an induction hob.

Also on the ground floor is a double bedroom with king sized bed with views onto the courtyard garden outside. Opposite is a large bathroom with bath, and shower over. The bedroom and bathroom have larger than average doors, making Harbinger a practical option for people with restricted mobility. The bathroom can be used as a wet room for people unable to climb into the bath, and with easy access from outside the ground floor of Harbinger is accessible to wheelchairs.

Stairs lead from the living room to a galleried mezzanine overlooking the dining area below. This is another light filled space in which to relax on one of the sofas, perhaps with a good book. One of the sofas converts into a double bed where there is a need for more flexibility of sleeping accommodation. There is a £50.00 supplement for use of the sofa bed. Also upstairs is a twin bedded room, with a shower room opposite.

On a warm day, throw open the doors onto the terrace outside, and enjoy the clipped bay trees, providing living sculpture. All have been grown from cuttings by the owners of Harbinger whose home is along side.

Walberton and beyond

Walberton is a convenient mid way spot between Arundel and Chichester. In addition to being in the perfect location for the premiere motorsport events at Goodwood each year, Harbinger is a few miles from Fontwell Park Races a unique figure of eight track and a jewel for West Sussex. Right next to Fontwell is Denmans Gardens a delightful four acre garden that is full of ideas for the keen gardener to take home with them.

The beaches at Climping and Bognor Regis are within five miles. Climping is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest. At its eastern end, beside the mouth of the River Arun, is the West Beach Café built by local craftsmen using materials sourced locally. It is worth a visit, the fish and chips do come highly recommended!

Further west Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve is another area of outstanding natural beauty and a place of special scientific interest. The harbour has a small entrance to the sea so remains tidal and has extensive walks that link Bognor Regis and Aldwick in the east with Siddlesham and Selsey in the west.

A short distance to the east of Walberton lies Arundel. An historic market town, dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops, as well as restaurants and tearooms. It’s a great place to wander and just enjoy the hospitality on offer there.

Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for almost 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England, and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. The Keep at the centre of the castle dates from the 11th Century. Inside the Keep there are 131 steps to climb to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs. It is definitely worth the effort.

Five miles to the west of Harbinger is Chichester, the cathedral city of Sussex. It is one of the great well-preserved Georgian cities in the UK that has played a key role in the affairs of Sussex since at least Roman times. The city’s broad streets are packed with Listed buildings, dominated by the towering presence of the cathedral. In the late spring and summer the cathedral spire is home to a family of peregrine falcons who swoop over the city at dusk

The city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient city walls, which helps to make Chichester compact and pleasant to explore on foot. It is a cosmopolitan, vibrant and friendly city proudly combining two thousand years of heritage with a lively lifestyle.

Chichester is also home to the famous Festival Theatre, which reopened in 2014 following a major refit to celebrate its 50th anniversary. It is renowned for its quality of productions, as well as featuring many world premieres. We have a link to the theatre from our website under ‘What's On’.
