Wander to the water’s edge, and you’ll see luxury yachts moored in a marina that’s lined by an enticing selection of bars and eateries. Beyond the harbour wall, the beach is backed by family-friendly amusements. Make time to explore the Ramsgate Tunnels, a subterranean system used to shelter 60,000 people during WWII air raids. Keen walkers and cyclists can follow the Viking Coastal Trail, which runs along the coastline from Ramsgate to Herne Bay, taking in the pretty town of Margate (5 miles), famous for its Turner Contemporary Gallery. Alternatively, visit Broadstairs (2 miles) to discover its connections to Charles Dickens. For a spot of retail therapy, Westwood Cross (2 miles) is one of Europe’s largest retail parks.
