Picturesque Fordwich, England’s smallest town (population 372), is a great location for exploring and sampling the local ales in one of the two riverside pubs. The Fordwich Arms, next to the 16th century Town Hall, has held a Michelin Star since 2019. Canoe Wild offers canoe and SUP hire and guided tours, in season, including beaver-spotting trips. Beautiful riverside, lakeside and woodland walks start in the town.
Explore the historic city of Canterbury (3 miles/10-minute drive) with its magnificent cathedral, learn about Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales or take a boat trip on the River Stour. Cycle the Crab and Winkle Way, walk or cycle the Kent Downs, spot a seal and sample the oysters at Whitstable (12 miles), or visit the Turner Contemporary gallery and swim in Walpole Bay lido at Margate (15 miles).
The closest beach is at Herne Bay (15 minutes’ drive). You can see bison, bears and wolves at Wildwood animal conservation centre on the way. You can also go back in time by exploring the castles of Dover, Deal and Walmer. Good train connections to London (Sturry station - 12 minutes’ walk). Beach 7 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 100 yards.
