Tenterden is a town in the borough of Ashford in Kent, England. It stands on the edge of the remnant forest the Weald, overlooking the valley of the River Rother, and it was a member of the Cinque Ports Confederation. Known as ’The Jewel of the Weald,’ Tenterden’s history has been shaped by its location. In the Middle Ages sheep grazed on rich marshland pastures and thus flourished in the 14th Century. Today, Tenterden is best known for its lovely, wide High Street lined with weatherboarded buildings, Georgian, Jacobean, and Victorian shops, and overlooked by tall, leafy trees. Many of the buildings date from the 18th century, when Tenterden enjoyed a renaissance due to a resurgence in the wool and cloth industry.
