Ventnor is a Victorian seaside town situated on the southern side of the Isle of Wight, right in the heart of the famous Undercliff, much of which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visitors will find a great variety of lovely seaside tea shops, pubs and restaurants dotted along the esplanade serving locally caught fish and locally brewed ales. There are also some quirky and bespoke shops, a park and a children’s paddling pool. The town, which for the most part is built on the steep hill leading to the beach, retains its original seaside charm and makes a great day out for all the family.

Sheltered from the north by St Boniface Downs, owned by the National Trust, Ventnor benefits from its own micro-climate which provides an ideal haven for a variety of flora and fauna. The neighbouring village of Bonchurch lies just to the east of Ventnor and is renowned for its literary connections; writers and poets such as Dickens, Stackpole and Swinburn all resided here for a time. Dickens remarked, ‘the prettiest place I ever saw in my life, at home or abroad’.

Explore the rock pools, enjoy great local walks and easy access to the many attractions the Isle of Wight has to offer. Outdoor pursuits on the island are well catered for and include horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, water sports and golf. There are numerous attractions for all ages across the island including The Needles with its chairlift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Bay. You can also visit Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and its gardens, as well as Blackgang Chine, the oldest themed attraction in the UK, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Tapnell Farm Park, Carisbrooke Castle or the sailing towns of Yarmouth and Cowes. Beach ½ mile. Shop, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

Helpful, accommodating and welcoming hosts. Great base from which to travel around the IoW - bus stops in both directions right outside property. All you could need inside, very cosy and very well equipped - a home from home. No hesitation in recommending to others.

What a wonderful place to stay. This was our first visit to the Isle of Wight and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. We loved reading about and seeing images of all the work that Anna and Sharon have done to the property. The original features that have been retained are wonderful, especially the oven in the bathroom. The cottage has everything and anything you could possibly want or need, including an air-fryer, coffee pod machine, beach towels, plastic picnic items and blakets for cooler evenings. The most important items for us were having two bedrooms with double beds and a private patio with a BBQ, which we made very good use of. The drive to the property is steep and narrow and I can understand why people would be apprehensive about reversing down it, luckily my husband was a dab hand by the end of the week but as there is a public car park 1 min behind the house, parking isn't a problem. Sharon was an amazing host. Her communication was great and she helped us to book our ferry crossing and communicated with us during our stay, even when she was unwell in bed!Hill House Bakery is about 1 minute from a small Tesco and Crave ice-cream shop (their flavours change daily). There is also a small co-op about 3 minute walk away. The Crab and Lobster pot pub is 1 minute away and we got a very warm welcome there. The beach is about a 10 minute walk.Ventnor has lots of amenities including a wide range of restaurants, bistros and take-aways and a butchers (fab for our BBQ food). We ate twice at the Spyglass Inn on the esplanade and enjoyed both visits, especially the seafood. We absolutely loved our stay y Hill House Bakery and will definitely be back.
