Guests say

Drovers Cottage receives glowing praise for its tranquil, secluded setting amidst beautiful countryside, making it ideal for relaxation and walking. Guests consistently highlight the cottage’s comfort, cosy atmosphere, and excellent equipment. Wildlife sightings and proximity to local pubs and walks are much appreciated. The welcome touches on arrival are noted, though not guaranteed. Minor drawbacks include the hand-held shower and occasional cluster flies, but these do not detract from the overwhelmingly positive experience. Many guests are repeat visitors, reflecting the cottage’s enduring appeal.

Guests frequently describe the cottage as well maintained, tidy, and comfortable. There are no negative comments regarding cleanliness, and the property is repeatedly praised for its upkeep.

The location is universally praised for its peace, seclusion, and access to countryside walks and wildlife. Its proximity to Petersfield and local pubs is also highlighted as a benefit.

The cottage is described as cosy, comfortable, and well equipped, with underfloor heating and a good mattress. The only minor issue raised is the standard double bed size, which may be smaller than some guests are used to.

Facilities are generally excellent, with a well-equipped kitchen and thoughtful amenities. The main drawback mentioned is the hand-held shower over the bath due to the sloping roof, and a rare issue with cluster flies.

Several guests mention thoughtful welcome packs with milk, biscuits, tea, and coffee, which are appreciated after long journeys. Please note, however, that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

As the name suggests, Drovers Cottage was formerly a place of rest for drovers (modern day livestock transporters), who travelled hundreds and hundreds of miles with their animals and needed somewhere to rest. The group of fir trees, which still remain to this day, were an easily recognisable landmark even from afar. The fields surrounding the cottage are of archaeological interest, as they were used as Roman camps and often oyster shells can be found, these were brought in barrels from the coast for the Roman warriors to eat, and they tossed the shells into the fields.

Having been totally renovated, Drovers Cottage offers tasteful and well-presented accommodation, and is within easy walking distance to the quaint thatched-roof village, with its shop, beautiful church and two pubs serving good food. This picturesque village is steeped in history, it has a bronze burial in the parish, which dates back to 2000BC. The village was part of the Royal Manor, belonging first to King Alfred the Great, then later William the Conqueror, which is recorded in the Domesday Book.

Within easy reach are the South Downs, Portsmouth, Winchester Cathedral, Southampton with its maritime history, the New Forest, Chichester, beaches at the Witterings or Hayling Island, the Watercress steam train, Jane Austen’s house, Gilbert White’s house and Birdworld.
