Set in the green rolling hills of East Sussex, this superb oast house offers luxurious and spacious accommodation for up to eight guests across four beautiful bedrooms, along with three bathrooms. Full of characterful features and charm, this wonderful property is ideal for a group of friends or family seeking an idyllic countryside break for a spot of rest and relaxation within easy reach of the south coast.

Set along a peaceful lane just a few miles from the charming town of Mayfield, the oast house immediately impresses when viewed from the outside, with its warm, red brickwork and towering roundel. Inside, the property is a delight, with original beams and exposed brickwork complemented by tasteful and stylish décor throughout. The beautiful hallway welcomes guests into the house and leads into the kitchen, which has a large feature fireplace, now home to an Aga and perfect for keeping things cosy in the winter. With sparkling worktops and immaculate white woodwork, it is also well-equipped for creating some wonderful meals. The country-style breakfast table is perfect for a leisurely start to the day. Next door the beautiful, formal dining room has large table to seat eight and has lovely views out into the garden through the glass doors. Also on the ground floor are three of the four bedrooms, along with a smart shower room. Guests can be assured of warm toes with the benefit of underfloor heating throughout. The double bedroom is light and airy, with patio doors leading directly out into the garden. The en-suite shower room is beautifully designed with mosaic tiles, and the exposed brickwork and ceiling beam add character. The first twin room sits in the circular roundel and is pretty and inviting, with its floral bedding and exposed beams. The second twin room is equally delightful, with dual aspect windows and crisp, fresh bedding.

Heading up the stunning handmade staircase to the first floor, guests will be wowed by the superb sitting room. This huge space, with its fabulous vaulted ceiling, cosy wood burner and large, comfortable, leather sofas, is a wonderful space for guests to get together and relax. Also on this floor is the spectacular master bedroom. Set in the top of the roundel, the king-size bed sits beneath the exposed oak rafters that reach to the roof, creating a fantastic canopy. Complete with an elegant en-suite bathroom, this is a truly special room.

Stepping outside, guests will be welcomed on to the paved patio where there is a table and chairs perfect for enjoying drink. With a large lawn backed by fields of grazing sheep and mature trees, it is an idyllic spot to relax in the sunshine. Five Ashes Oast is a wonderfully elegant and spacious property, full of character and ideal for a family seeking a week of relaxation in luxurious surroundings.

The High Weald Area of Outstanding Beauty reaches from Horsham in East Sussex to Tenterden in Kent. A patchwork of pretty villages, green fields, woodland and hedgerows, the landscape dates back to the 14th century when it was first established as farmland. Today, this protected area is still used for farming, and is also home to a number of historic buildings and castles that attract many visitors over the year.

Just a 20- minute drive will bring you to the picturesque town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. A popular destination with upper class visitors – including royalty – from London for centuries, today the town is a delightful place for a spot of shopping and some lunch. Wander round the attractive streets lined with Victorian and Georgian architecture before heading to the famous Pantiles – an attractive colonnaded walkway home to a range of independent shops and galleries ¬– where you can browse at your leisure.

The High Weald is home to a number of beautiful historic castles and manor houses, one of the prettiest of which is the National Trust’s Scotney Castle, just outside the village of Lamberhurst. The estate is home to both the romantic ruins of Old Scotney Castle that sits on an island in the lake, and Scotney New Castle, a manor house built in the 19th century in Tudor Revival style. Explore the elegant rooms inside the wisteria-draped manor house before heading outside to enjoy the stunningly pretty woodland gardens, filled with rhododendrons and azalea bushes.

Immerse yourself in the history of the High Weald by paying a visit to the town of Battle. The original Battle Abbey was built as penance by William the Conqueror after the battle of 1066. The ruins today are of a later construction, completed in 16th century, but are nonetheless impressive. Explore the ruins of this atmospheric building, including the 13th-century vaulted Novices’ Common Room, before heading to the fascinating Gatehouse Exhibition, a museum that details the abbey’s history and has a viewing platform from where visitors can take in the fantastic views. Outside, visitors can see the site of the original battlefield and enjoy a stroll around the Wood Sculptures trail.
