Guests say

Rock Cottage in Matlock is highly praised for its excellent location, offering spectacular views and proximity to walking trails and local pubs. Guests appreciate the cleanliness, comfort, and well-equipped nature of the cottage, along with the peaceful surroundings. Some concerns were raised about heating noise and parking, but these were minor compared to the overall positive experience. The thoughtful touches by the owners, such as a welcome package, were well-received.

Guests consistently noted the cottage as clean and well-kept, with fresh bedding and towels, contributing to a comfortable and relaxing stay.

The location is highly regarded for its views and walking opportunities, though the steep access and parking situation may not suit everyone.

The cottage is generally found to be comfortable and cosy, with some remarks about a creaky bed and a chilly kitchen. The noise from heating pipes was a concern for one guest.

Facilities are well-received with a well-appointed kitchen and entertainment options. However, comments about shower power and central heating suggest some room for improvement.

The owners' thoughtfulness is evident in the welcome package and good communication. While such gestures are appreciated, they are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

Rock Cottage is a traditional, detached property overlooking, the charming White Peak village of Winster. With attractive, original features, including exposed beams and period fireplaces, the Cottage is an ideal venue for couples or a small family. It is equipped with a travel cot, a changing mat and a high chair for young families.

From the well-appointed kitchen, there is a single step down into the inviting sitting room. Here a glowing, coal-effect, electric fire creates a cosy atmosphere. Tucked away at the end of this room is a dining area where you will also find a large selection of books, local guides and games for evenings and any periods of inclement weather. This is also a great place to spread out maps and make plans for the day ahead. Upstairs, the main double bedroom and the second, single bedroom both have stunning views over the local church across the surrounding countryside.

To the side of the cottage, is a surprisingly secluded patio area, with a glass-doored cabin, that contains all you require for alfresco-style dining within the peace and tranquillity of your surroundings.

There are a number of shops, pubs and local attractions, all within walking distance, in the heart of Winster. These include the Eighteenth Century Market House, which was the first property to be acquired by the National Trust in Derbyshire.

For walkers, the Limestone Way runs alongside the Cottage and Stanton Moor, with the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, and Arbor Low, Derbyshire’s ‘Stonehenge’ are nearby; the Tissington and High Peak trails are ideal for cyclists and there are numerous venues for both bouldering and rock climbing.

Head towards Matlock, where you can take in stunning views from the top of Pic Tor War Memorial; hop aboard a Peak Rail steam train or a vintage tram at the National Tram Museum at Crich or marvel at the sights from an alpine-style cable car while ascending to the Heights of Abraham, where there are natural caves and a museum with fossils. Be sure to visit Bakewell, where you will find the historic Bakewell Bridge, the Old House Museum and of course, Bakewell Pudding!

Situated just a short drive from Chatsworth House and both Haddon and Hassop halls and a score of pretty market towns and villages, nestling in a picturesque, rural landscape, Rock Cottage is an ideal base from which to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Peak District.

Nestled in the scenic Peak District National Park is the charming village of Winster, which boasts traditional 17th and 18th century houses, a well-stocked convenience store, a Post Office and two pubs where you can enjoy tasty food and local ales. Really enjoyed our stay.

Views across the valley, northward, across rooftops lovely. Close to The Miners Standard for good meals and service. Other pub, The Old Bowling Green, just down the hill has limited opening to around weekends, but is a busy and well patronised by friendly locals. Ask about the pizza night there. Parking is just a few yards (up the slope towards The Miners Standard) on the track. This is great because you cannot hear any traffic!! Cottage is south side, top of village. As an old mining village on a steep slope, cut through with ginnels, be prepared for steep walking around the village. Main Street where 7 day a week community run shop and post office is located at bottom of village.. Limestone Way passes by at back of village on the ridge which leads to Matlock. On opposite hills is a demanding path to The Nine Ladies stone circle. If you need low gradients and easy walking, East Anglia would be my suggestion. For a delightful cottage, a friendly village and some demanding walking then Rock Cottage is for you. Be aware that church clock rings every quarter hour and on the hour, but calls of owls from the nearby woodland provides decent aural compensation at night. Overall, we'd happily return to Winster and Rock Cottage again!
