Southport and its neighbour Ainsdale are situated on the North West England coast, where the Irish Sea meets the sea. The town was established in 1792 when William Sutton, an innkeeper, constructed a bathing house at what is now the southern terminus of Lord Street, the primary thoroughfare through the community. The town was small and sparsely populated at the beginning of the 19th century, when it started to attract tourists because of its convenient access to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. It swiftly grew, and today it is home to Lord Street, an upscale, tree-lined shopping district, the Southport Pier Tramway, and the second-longest pleasure pier in the British Isles.
