Southport and its neighbouring community of Ainsdale are located on the coast of North West England, just where the Irish Sea meets the North Atlantic Ocean. Innkeeper William Sutton established the community in 1792 by constructing a bathhouse at the southern end of Lord Street. Prior to the start of the 19th century, when it became a famous tourist destination thanks to its proximity to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the town was tiny and sparsely inhabited. Soon after its founding, Southport became home to the Southport Pier Tramway and Lord Street, an upscale, tree-lined shopping district. Its pleasure pier is currently the second longest in the British Isles. Sand dunes border the shore from Birkdale to Woodvale, with those in Ainsdale being classified as a National Nature Reserve and a Ramsar site. This traditional coastal town is ideal for unwinding because of the 22 miles of coastline and abundance of beaches to explore. Discover beautiful parks and gardens, great places to shop, a vibrant nightlife, and a delectable selection of restaurants and classic coastal attractions. Explore the oldest iron pier in the United Kingdom, play some penny slots at the Pavilion, and enjoy some classic amusement park rides at Silcock's Funland. Splash World, Martin Mere, and Farmer Ted's are just a few of the family-friendly attractions in the area, while The Atkinson, a newly renovated £18 million arts facility housed in a Grade II listed building, features a wide range of visual and performing arts events. Southport has many annual events, such as the Southport Food and Drink Festival, Southport Air Show, Southport Flower Show, and Southport Jazz Festival. Part of England's Golf Coast, it features seven championship courses and was the site of The Open Championship in 2008. In an ideal location for a vacation at the beach, there is fun for everyone.
