Tucked in a tiny rural hamlet at the foot of Cross Fell, this idyllic stone cottage offers a peaceful base to explore the North Pennines. One of four holiday cottages set on a family farm, this three-bedroom property is bursting with homely comforts and offers panoramic views of the Eden Valley and the Lake District fells. After adventurous days traversing fells and watching wildlife, you’ll love returning here to dine on the patio and snuggle up in front of the wood burner. Blending rustic charm with relaxed rural decor, this cottage is warm and welcoming from the moment you step inside. The heart of the home is an open-plan living area that blends lounge, kitchen, dining room and conservatory in one thoughtfully arranged space. Set on a polished wooden floor with exposed beams and an inglenook fireplace with a wood burner, it’s ideal for socialising and relaxing, with a cosy seating area, a large, country-style kitchen and a dining table seating six. A few steps lead up to a raised conservatory with views across the garden to the Eden Valley and ample seating, while a central staircase takes you upstairs to a mezzanine area with a sofa bed that can sleep additional guests on request. This leads to three beautifully appointed bedrooms, a double with an en-suite bathroom, plus a king-size that can be converted to a twin on request and a twin that shares use of the family bathroom. Outside, the patio invites al fresco meals and drinks, and there’s shared access to a grassy garden plus private parking for two cars.
Set out on foot to explore a network of paths from short, tranquil strolls to an energetic hike up Cross Fell, the Pennine’s highest peak. Scenic road routes and challenging mountain biking tracks abound for keen cyclists, or head to Pooley Bridge (15 miles) at the head of Ullswater for water-based activities and lakeside walks. For a taste of history and stunning gardens, visit Lowther Castle (14 miles).
