About this property

Oak Cottage is a charming, reverse-level, 18th-century cottage with beams nestled in the historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, within the picturesque county of Cumbria. Ideal for couples seeking a tranquil countryside retreat, the cottage accommodates up to two guests and one well-behaved dog. From the moment you arrive, the cottage welcomes you with private parking and an enclosed garden, an inviting start to your holiday. As you step through the front door, take a moment to leave your walking boots behind, setting the tone for a relaxing evening ahead. Ascend to the first floor, where an open-plan sitting room, dining room, and kitchen await. This well-equipped space provides everything you need for a stress-free getaway, including cooking appliances and a warming woodburning stove. The shelves are stocked with an array of books, offering a perfect companion for moments of quiet relaxation. Descending to the ground floor, you'll find an inviting double bedroom leading to a well-appointed bathroom, where you can choose between a leisurely bath or an invigorating shower to unwind after your daily adventures. With the arrival of lighter evenings, the enclosed garden and outdoor seating beckon, an ideal spot for unwinding and perhaps indulging in alfresco dining. Appleby-in-Westmorland, with its rural charm and proximity to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Lake District, serves as the perfect country escape. The cottage is a short walk to Appleby Castle with its 11th-century Norman keep on the wide tree-lined street of Boroughgate, which is often referred to as one of England’s finest streets. Appleby has a host of boutique shops, cafes and traditional pubs with the ‘Hare and Hounds’ just a stone’s throw away. History enthusiasts can craft an itinerary brimming with visits to Penrith Castle, Lowther Castle and Gardens, and Dalemain Mansion, each with its mediaeval grounds and centuries-old tales. For nature lovers and avid walkers, the expansive 583,747 acres of the Lake District National Park await exploration. Discover the beauty of Aira Force Waterfall or conquer the trails of Kirkstone Mountain Pass. The Eden Valley is an idyllic setting for bird watching, nature walks, observing red squirrels and watching otters in the picturesque River Eden. For cyclists, the cottage has secure storage for two bicycles. For an intimate couple's escape to Cumbria, Oak Cottage stands as a highly recommended choice, offering a delightful blend of comfort, convenience, and proximity to the region's natural and historical treasures.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.

Comfortable living area and kitchen has everything that you would need on a holiday. Wood burner was required due to the cold weather and although different to my own was easy to operate with instructions given - quality of logs was excellent. Hope to return in better climatic conditions to enjoy the garden area and finish reading the wonderful book on Blencathra and some of the other guide books. Most pleasant stay.

It's in a beautiful area and we found the locals very friendly. We really enjoyed our stay and our little dog Norman loved the river walk. Would definitely recommend it.
