Appleby has a host of boutique shops, cafes and traditional pubs with the ‘Hare and Hounds’ just a stone’s throw away. History enthusiasts can craft an itinerary brimming with visits to Penrith Castle, Lowther Castle and Gardens, and Dalemain Mansion, each with its mediaeval grounds and centuries-old tales. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Due to inclement weather we didn't venture out further but would be plenty to keep you busy in the surrounding areas and some lovely walks. Cottage warm and welcoming with just about everything you need (a baking tray and some oven gloves wouldn't go amiss). Very clean and plenty logs for the woodburner. Comfy bed with fresh smelling sheets and lots of fluffy towels. Overall a lovely stay for some much needed R&R post Xmas.

We spotted the Otters and Red Squirrels by the river in the centre.

The parking was not very easy if another car was parked in the allotted space. Nice village with good amenities.
