Guests say

Guests consistently praise Blacksmith Cottage for its prime location, cleanliness, and comfort. The owners are commended for their friendliness and helpfulness, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere. The property is well-equipped and maintained, with a beautiful garden and convenient access to local amenities. The town of Appleby-in-Westmorland offers good walks, shops, and pubs, enhancing the stay for visitors.

Reviewers frequently mention the cottage's cleanliness, describing it as 'spotlessly clean' and 'very clean'. This indicates a high standard of cleanliness maintained by the owners.

The cottage's location is highly praised for being central, quiet, and close to shops, pubs, and scenic walks. Its proximity to the town centre and ease of access to local attractions contribute to its excellent location score.

Comfort is a recurring theme, with guests finding the cottage cosy, comfortable, and well-equipped. The presence of a 'lovely garden' and a 'comfortable bed' are noted, although one mention of traffic noise suggests a slight deduction from a perfect score.

Facilities are well-regarded, with mentions of a well-equipped kitchen, secure garden, and storage for mobility scooters. The recent addition of a walk-in shower is appreciated, although a suggestion for a grab rail indicates room for minor improvements.

While the reviews reflect the owners' helpfulness and the property's provision of amenities, there are no specific mentions of gifts or extra thoughtful touches that would warrant a score in this category.

About this property

This attractive terraced cottage, a former blacksmith’s cottage is situated on a quiet lane, just a short walk from the centre of the ancient market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. This delightful old cottage provides an ideal base for exploring the Lakeland fells, with miles of pathways to discover, and with the added benefit of all the town’s excellent amenities on the doorstep. Warm and cosy throughout, this charming cottage is most welcoming with a well laid-out sitting room with original ceiling beam, a leather suite and access through to a well-equipped kitchen/diner. The kitchen then leads out to a raised patio area and above that is a very pretty garden; a tranquil and elegant spot to soak up the sun, read a good book and enjoy your favourite tipple.

The two bedrooms are pleasantly furnished and styled and a good-sized bathroom ensures that guests have all they could ask for in this lovely Lakeland cottage. This holiday home is a short walk to the main high street, Boroughgate, which is described as being one of the finest in England, and it’s also only a short walk to the river where you can walk past the cricket ground and out along the river bank where friendly ducks and even an occasional elusive otter can be sighted. Spend time exploring the magnificent countryside or take a trip on the famous Settle-Carlisle railway line and visit the likes of Settle and Skipton to take in the Yorkshire countryside before crossing the famous Ribblehead Viaduct.

To the west of Appleby is the Lake District whose northern and central lakes are within easy reach, and to the east lie the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With the Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Borders all within easy reach makes any holiday in this wonderful area a memorable one.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is situated on a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range. The town offers shops and pubs, along with a Norman Castle, a medieval Church and a horse fair in June. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, and within reach are both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.

We travelled up by train and the cottage is only a short distance from the station. Well placed for all amenities and local walks, a lovely quiet spot with a pretty garden. My partner wants me to mention the quality of the kitchen knives ,he finds it rare to find this standard of kitchen equipment - not forgetting the supporting role of an exceptional frying pan, so it made his stay!

The cottage was as described. We had lovely weather for the time of year. Gill & Andy where lovely hosts very informative and friendly people. The only minor concern was no lighting on the concrete steps. We will definitely be going again for a short break.
