About this property

Alston 3.8 miles. This character cottage has been lovingly converted from the old schoolhouse to a one bed cottage an exceptional standard. Enjoying a tranquil setting, Bothy welcomes couples looking for a charming base for exploring the North Pennines. Upon arrival, discover the offroad parking spaces before stepping into the pretty entrance hall, leading directly into the kitchen and dining areas. Wonderfully appointed, the sitting room features ample plush seating along with a vast selection of books and a TV for entertainment. Exposed stonework and roof lights give this Alston cottage a light and airy ambience, and a door leads from the downstairs sitting room to the outside private patio area. Alternatively, climb the stairs to access the kitchen/diner, where you can whip up a home-cooked dish with assistance from a range of appliances, even including the likes of a washing machine and tumble dryer, so you won’t have to worry about bringing your entire wardrobe! As the night falls, freshen up in the en-suite bathroom with a luxury soak in the Jacuzzi bath before getting settled in the king-size bed. To the outside is a pretty patio area where you can relax at the bench and ponder on the holiday thus far. Bothy is a splendid escape, whatever time of year. Note: This property can be booked with Refs. 1109940 and 1109949, together they sleep 8.

Alston, the highest market town in England, is located in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is surrounded by a distinctive scenery of moorland, hills, rivers, and waterfalls. Oliver Twist and Jane Eyre were both produced by ITV in this charming village with its cobblestone alleys and unique nooks and crannies. Artists and authors have long been inspired by Alston and the North Pennines; W H Auden adored the area, and Alston continues to be an inspiration to the local crafters. The town is home to several unique stores, including galleries and shops with fine crafts. Take a ride on one of the meticulously restored steam or diesel trains on the South Tynedale Railway, which runs from Alston to Slaggyford, through the breathtaking beauty of the South Tyne valley. Additionally regarded as one of England's best salmon rivers, the River Tyne offers local day-ticket fishing. The Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a terrific family day out with interactive exhibitions. The North Pennines used to be one of the richest lead mining centres in Europe. This makes a fantastic base because northern Cumbria, County Durham, and Northumberland are all easily accessible, and the A686 is one of the world's top drives according to the AA.

Wow! Did this place deliver in spades. The cottage is amazing. Quirky. Packed with character. Very well equipped and immaculately clean. Mark and Jo are super hosts. Genuinely one of the nicest couples I’ve met. Whilst they live on site, I never saw them (except arrival and departure) but it was great to know they were there if needed. The scone and fresh eggs on arrival were very welcome too - thank you! Now location…. This cottage is on a hillside in heaven! The views from The Bothy are incredible but there are also so many walks straight from the door and a variety too! Whether you want 1 mile to 50 mile, riverside or moorland, the one thing you can be sure of, is the area has it all. I parked the car up on arrival and it didn’t move again til I left. I walked a total of over 45 miles during the week and never did the same walk twice! Not only that but I reckon I didn’t see more than a dozen people throughout the entire weeks walks!!! Having said that this has to be one of the friendliest places I’ve ever been. Every single person I met was absolutely lovely Nenthead (under a mile away) has a local shop and fabulous cafe (the Hive) and the mine is a great visit. Hopefully the local pub will reopen soon. Alston (3.8 miles) has a variety of shops with a couple of pubs/restaurants. Issac Tea Trail literally runs from The Bothy but honestly this whole area is a walkers paradise. For anyone who’s thinking of booking…. Do it! You won’t be disappointed!!! I can’t wait to return for New Year and this time I’m taking dog and hubby!

The cottage was comfortable and well supplied to keep you occupied if unable to get out. Mark and Jo were helpful and approachable. We would certainly pass on our recommendations.

Jo and Mark are friendly owners and made sure that the cottage was set up with everything needed. The cottage has a well equipped kitchen with all appliances; a lounge with TV and small fire on the ground floor; a large double bedroom with plenty of storage space for clothes and belongings; and a bathroom with separate shower, jacuzzi bath and two wash hand basins. Felt warm and cozy throughout. Would be happy to recommend as a base to explore the local area. Very suitable for guests with a dog.
