Welcome to The Garrison, a holiday complex at Bowness-on-Solway, located on a site steeped in history. This was formerly an important Roman fort along Hadrian’s Wall known as Fort Maia. During the build and excavations, many Roman remains were discovered and catalogued. There’s even a small visitors’ centre and a scale model depicting how the fort might have looked, where you can buy Roman souvenirs to remind you of your stay. Guests have access to an on-site gym and an excellent bistro serving a variety of dishes.

There are four studio apartments, sleeping up to two guests, perfect for a couple’s relaxing retreat in Hadrian’s Wall country. There are also four shepherds’ huts, sleeping up to three guests, great fun and ideal for couples and families wanting to try the ‘glamping’ experience. From here you can explore southern Scotland, Gretna outlet village, historic Carlisle, as well as The Northern Lakes and Western Fells, all within half an hour’s drive. It’s a great base for keen walkers and people who like the outdoors. It’s on a major cycle way and popular with guests doing the coast-to-coast walk, either as a stopover or an interesting break to the journey. Bowness-on-Solway is part of the Solway Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Ideal for walkers and cyclists and rich in wildlife and birds for nature lovers. Nearby is Hadrian’s Wall, which dates from the early second century AD.

Running through Bowness-on-Solway is cycle route 72, known as ‘Hadrian’s Cycleway’; if you love cycling, you’ll love this part of Cumbria. In Bowness-on-Solway there is a tearoom and a pub serving local ales and great food within walking distance. You have several cafés and restaurants in Silloth which is a nice drive along the coast, where you have arguably the best golf course in Cumbria. There are plenty of activities nearby, a public swimming pool, alpaca walks, climbing walls and plenty of culture to take in, including the Rum Story, go karting at Maryport and Carlisle Castle to name a few. If you like lakes and mountains, you are about 30 minutes from The Lake District National Park and about 55 minutes’ drive from Keswick. Berach 500 yards.

I would not recommend this accommodation. A young lad led us to our accommodation and noted the door opens onto the car park, when asked where the garden or patio was (as advertised) he pointed to a picnic bench across the car park. We could not open a window for fresh air as the window opened onto the bistro seating area, some dishes were left dirty by the previous occupants nor checked by housekeeping during changeover. We could not get a signal on the TV , after contacting the bistro a young lad came over and managed to get a channel, he said he would get the manageress to come over to see us, she never appeared. When we decided to go to bed we found it to be uncomfortably hard, we were woken around 5am by a cockerel who continued to sound off for hours. We booked for a week Sun 3rd Aug to Sun 10th Aug but were ready to leave the next day unfortunately a storm hit and we had to stay another day. We left on the Tuesday morning as we felt very disappointed with this accommodation.

Place was modern, clean and tidy. Stayed for 5 nights. We had downstairs apartment and the one above us was occupied for 2 nights. Everytime someone upstairs moved the floorboards creaked very loudly. When we made comments about the noise , we were told that we should have booked an upstairs one!!!!There was also a Cockerel in the yard outside which woke us up every morning at 5am and was vocal nearly all the time we were in. The very local King's Arms served mostly homemade pub food at a reasonable price.

On arrival the staff were welcoming and helpful. The apartment was spotlessly clean with everything we needed and anything we needed the staff were only to happy to help. The bistro food was excellent all home cooked and really tasty the portions were excellent. On a few occasions we opted to have takeaway from the bistro and they happily delivered it to the apartment which was much appreciated. On whole we could not fault the staff accommodation or food well worth our visit
