Carlisle is also a fantastic city to explore during the day, to brush up on its local history head to the medieval Carlisle Cathedral which does daily services, Carlisle Castle a 12th-century fortress, Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. On sunny days take a scenic drive from the property to the Lake District which has an abundance of extraordinary walks and lakes to explore including Bassenthwaite Lake. The Retreat is ideally located for a refreshing, romantic and memorable getaway for you and your loved one.

Shops, taverns, and restaurants line the streets of Wigton, which also features a theatre, bowls, swimming, tennis, and a variety of other activities. 'A Time to Dance' by Lord Melvyn Bragg was set in Wigton and the surrounding area, where he grew up, and where he wrote several of his works. The cathedral city of Carlisle is just 12 miles away, as is Keswick, which is north of Derwentwater and near to Lake Bassenthwaite, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the North Lakes.
