Allonby is perfectly placed for exploring the Solway Coast and the Western Lake District. It has a beautiful part pebble, part sandy beach, which is lovely for a walk whilst admiring the views out towards Scotland. The Cumbrian Coastal Way passes through the village, and walkers can enjoy many miles of green sea banks. Mawbray beach (2 miles north) is backed by undulating sand dunes, whilst birdwatchers and nature lovers should head to the rspb Reserve at Campfield Marsh (20 miles). For cycling enthusiasts, try out the mountain bike trails at Whinlatter (16 miles), or road cyclists can challenge themselves on the Newlands and Whinlatter passes. Cockermouth, the birthplace of Wordsworth, is less than 10 miles away and has lots of independent shops to explore, as well as a great choice of cafes, pubs and restaurants to refuel. The bustling market town of Keswick (24 miles) and the Roman port of Maryport (5 miles) are both within driving distance.
