Hexham 10 miles. The Hayloft is a delightful cottage resting in Colwell, Northumberland, with off-road parking, an electric fire, and a picturesque position on a working farm. Suited to families or friends, this thoughtfully restored, semi-detached retreat offers an appealing place to experience the county’s coast, countryside and heritage. Step through the door and into the open-plan living space, where attractive picture windows frame the changing scenes of farm life outside. Horses and sheep graze in the surrounding fields, while far-reaching countryside views provide a memorable backdrop throughout the seasons. Prepare breakfast or an evening meal in the stylish kitchen, serve your dishes around the dining table, then settle onto one of the two sofas as the electric fire casts a welcoming glow across the sitting area.
When the day draws to a close, head upstairs to choose between a king-size bedroom and a twin, both equipped with televisions. A family bathroom provides a bath with a shower over, ideal for freshening up after days spent walking or cycling. Outside, the garden combines a gravelled area and lawn with furniture, creating a pleasant setting for morning drinks or alfresco meals. Begin your adventures in Hexham, where the ancient Hexham Abbey stands beside its pretty park, the medieval gaol reveals stories from the town’s past, and walks beside the River Tyne offer a gentler pace. Continue to Corbridge, a historic Saxon village with characterful stone buildings, narrow streets and a riverbank that invites an afternoon stroll.
Rothbury provides another rewarding destination, placing you within reach of Northumberland National Park and its broad landscapes. History enthusiasts can also explore Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman forts of Vindolanda, Chesters and Housesteads, while Newcastle offers a lively city day out. Bring each adventure to a satisfying close at The Hayloft.
A bustling little market town, Hexham has several antique shops and is popular with tourists visiting nearby Hadrian’s Wall. Beautiful old Hexham Abbey dates back to the 7th century and has a superb Saxon crypt. Shoppers flock to colourful stalls in The Shambles in the Market Place on Tuesday and close by is the 14th century Moot Hall, now an art gallery. The town boasts plenty of open spaces, particularly the Sele next to the abbey, which is now a lovely public park. Nearby is Tyne Green - a riverside country park - and Hexham Race Course is just to the south of the town.
