Heckberry Cottage is praised for its peaceful and beautiful location, cosy atmosphere, and wildlife views. Guests appreciate the homely feel, the multi-fuel stove, and the welcome pack. The garden and local walks add to the charm, though some noted the access path is narrow and the cottage could benefit from maintenance.
Reviews are mixed regarding cleanliness. Some guests found the cottage not very clean, with dust, cobwebs, and mould mentioned, while others did not raise cleanliness as an issue. This suggests that experiences vary, but there is room for improvement.
The location is highly praised for its tranquillity, proximity to nature, and good walking routes. The presence of wildlife and the scenic views are frequently mentioned as highlights. However, the narrow access track is noted as a challenge by some.
Guests find the cottage warm, cosy, and comfortable, with a soft bed and a multi-fuel stove enhancing the comfort level. However, some guests mentioned that the mattress is soft and worn, indicating that the comfort experience could be inconsistent.
The cottage is equipped with necessary facilities, including a modern bathroom and a kitchen with essentials. The fire is appreciated, but some guests suggest that the kitchenware could be refreshed and that heating instructions should be provided.
The welcome pack is frequently mentioned and well-received by guests, indicating thoughtfulness from the hosts. However, it should be noted that such gifts are a kind gesture and may not be guaranteed for every stay.

Situated within 6 acres of the owner’s land, and accessed by a rough track, yet less than a mile away from the village centre. Heckberry Cottage dates back to the 1800s and retains much of the character of an older building, but with plenty of contemporary features too. The living and dining area are open plan to the galley kitchen, and are comfortable and practical with a large multi-fuel burner that heats the whole house. The views from the ground floor look straight across the fields out to the Weardale valley and are totally uninterrupted, apart from the horses in the field opposite! With numerous established public footpaths that lead right from the door and through the fields, this is a walker’s paradise. The Weardale Way passes through the owner’s grounds and is a very popular route, as is the short walk into the centre of St John’s Chapel. Boasting two village pubs, a tearoom, café and small supermarket, St John’s Chapel has a thriving community that offers a great welcome to visitors all year round. Only 12 miles from Stanhope, guests also have the opportunity to explore this popular Weardale town and take a visit to the Dales Centre which offers plenty to see and do.
Killhope Lead Mining Museum is another popular destination for families and is only a little over 5 miles away and definitely worth a visit. Also recommended is a trip to the small Cumbrian town of Alston which shares the title of being the highest market town in England. Alston boasts tearooms, a farmers market and local pubs, and is a popular stop off for cyclists enjoying a ride through the counties of Northumberland, Cumbria and County Durham. A little further afield but still within around an hour’s drive, guests can visit the cathedral city of Durham, the Lake District and Northumberland National Park. Don’t miss Hadrian’s Wall for ancient history, Roman forts and settlements, the Durham Heritage Coast for fabulous beaches and Newcastle upon Tyne for culture, including The Sage and a great day out shopping. Warm, welcoming and traditional, Heckberry Cottage is the perfect retreat for guests looking to enjoy a quiet break at any time of year. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Comfortable cosy cottage in a stunning location. We arrived at night and the owner had kindly lit the fire and put a heater on in the bedroom, she had also left an excellent welcome pack that we really appreciated. On opening the curtains the next morning we were greeted with the most stunning views across the valley. Great walking from the doorstep, our dogs loved it, and the amenities of St John's Chapel are only a short stroll away - it took us around 15 minutes to walk to the pub via the nearest footbridge at the bottom of the track.
