The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman ford which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were ?rst laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions.

Very clean and comfortable. My only criticism is that (at 6'3") I had difficulty fitting in the short bath and not enough head room to stand up to use the shower. There appears to be plenty of room for a longer bath. Would definitely return all the same.

There was a very nice surprise of items on our arrival including milk in the fridge, home made jam, and fresh flowers in the lounge. And in a lovely quiet location overlooking the countryside.

The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming we loved it. Even when the weather was bad there was enough entertainment that the cottage provides.
