About this property

Walworth Castle Holiday Cottage is a detached, single-storey cottage set on the grounds of Walworth Castle in the small, scattered village of Walworth, County Durham. Resting within 18 acres of lawns and woodlands, this delightful cottage is an ideal base for touring the area and is just three miles from the A1. The cottage has been tastefully furnished with an open-plan living area which creates a seamless flow between the main living areas. The kitchen is well-equipped for culinary creations, the dining area invites you to gather round to enjoy those meals and the sitting area is the spot for relaxation and downtime. Further along, you'll find two comfortable bedrooms, a family bathroom and a lovely, enclosed patio area to the rear, where you can relax in the hot tub with an indulgent soak after a day out in the Northern Dales. You can also enjoy the surrounding grounds which are shared with the hotel's guests. Walworth Castle is a magnificent Grade I listed, 12th-century castle, which operates as a wonderful three-star hotel, and from your cottage, you can stroll across to the hotel to treat yourself to a glorious afternoon tea, a bar meal in Farmers' Bar, or push the boat out and sample an exquisite dinner in Hansard's Restaurant and Library Tower. A short drive will take you to Darlington with a selection of restaurants, pubs and shops, as befits a large thriving town. A little further afield, explore the splendid countryside around Richmond and Barnard Castle, enjoying the classic Dales landscape of dry-stone walls, rivers and valleys. This is the perfect walking country for those wanting to explore the upper valleys of Middleton-in-Teesdale, incorporating the well-known Cauldron Snout and the High and Low Force waterfalls. Head north and visit the magnificent Durham Cathedral, perched high above the meandering River Wear. This delightful cottage is perfectly placed for exploring the Northern Dales.

Walworth is a small scattered village in the borough of Darlington, within the ceremonial county of County Durham. The nucleus of the village is the 16th century Walworth Castle and Park, and the surrounding area is known locally as 'The Gateway to the Dales'. An easy drive from Walworth will take you to nearby Teesdale, which has a host of excellent visitor attractions and stunning scenery on its doorstep. The Dale is home to the stunning waterfall of High Force and great walking along The Teesdale Way. Barnard Castle and Bowes offer historic castles and stately homes, with Eggleston Hall and Gardens - a Georgian country house, Rokeby Hall and Park and Raby Castle being just three such examples. A short drive north will take you to the city of Durham, which oozes charm and offers lots to see and do. From its splendid Romanesque cathedral and castle, which is a World Heritage Site, to its tiny, cobbled streets crammed with delightful galleries, boutiques and eateries, there's not much this city doesn't have. On arrival the cottage was lovely and warm and very welcoming. 2 good size bedrooms and a big bathroom, nice bedding, with plenty of towels. The living area is all in one which is really convenient, the kitchen is well stocked, meaning you have everything you need to cook with plenty of glasses, crockery and cutlery. In the sitting room area of the living quarter there are 2 sofas that are very comfortable and a good size smart tv. Outside is an enclosed yard which is perfect if you have a dog. The hot tub is lovely, sitting at about 40° and very clean. A couple of improvements could be made, but please don't let this put you off. A curtain across the front door would not only make it warmer but if you have the lights on, walking through the hallway at night you feel a little exposed as there is just nets over the large glass front door. A new bath panel and a little silicone would improve the bathroom which is lovely and the lights in the mirror unit need looking at. The top of the hot tub needs a bar to assist with the removal and closing as it is heavy. It's not for everyone but personally a TV in each of the bedrooms would be a great improvement. The above are little improvements in an otherwise beautiful cottage, with lovely grounds to walk around, that we will 100% be booking again. As a side note, I spoke to multiple members of staff while on site and everyone was extremely helpful and friendly, credit to the staff.

The fridge didn’t keep food cold, even when turned on full. Hot tub was a big issue, if it was topped up, it took hours to reheat, and rarely reached full temperature of 40°. The lid was extremely heavy and it was a struggle for 2 adults to replace. This was changed at day three. Towels and bedding was replaced once during the 12 days. The rubbish was still there when we left no bin bags to replace when full. I also felt the hot tub area was extremely dark at night. The cottage itself was nice and with a few adoptions could actually be great.
