Climb the stairs to the first floor, where two thoughtfully arranged bedrooms await. Choose from a flexible twin room, which can be arranged as a super-king-size on request and enjoys countryside views, or the king-size bedroom, which benefits from a built-in TV, ideal for slower starts to the day. The bathroom serves the accommodation with a sleek finish, featuring a P-shaped bath with shower over and a heated towel rail, offering a refreshing space to unwind at the end of the day. If you don’t fancy cooking, the nearby village of Gilsland offers a selection of pubs serving food and a quaint café, alongside a children’s play park and scenic riverside walks by the River Irthing, while the surrounding area is steeped in history, with sections of Hadrian’s Wall close by, as well as access to the Pennine Way, Birdoswald Roman Fort, Naworth and Featherstone Castle, and the atmospheric ruins of Thirlwall, Bellister, Blenkinsopp and Bewcastle.

Further afield, enjoy days out at Talkin Tarn Country Park with its ancient glacial lake and walking trails, or explore the market towns of Brampton and Haltwhistle, both offering weekly markets, local shops and eateries, with the North Pennines, Eden Valley, Scottish Borders and the Lake District all within reach. Choose 11 The Forge as a well-located base for discovering the rich history and varied landscapes of Cumbria and beyond.

The harbour also offers lovely walks, a harbour shop and an excellent pub. The beach has an attractive small pier, beach huts, a lighthouse and Gun Hill, with cannons pointing out to sea. This small market town offers a variety of museums, one of which is an Amber museum, as well as galleries, independent shops and small weekly markets on Mondays and Thursdays.
