About 10 miles of Gilsland are Vindolanda, known for its reconstruction of a Roman village and its parchment inscriptions, and Housesteads Roman Fort. Blenkinsopp, Thirlwall, Bellister, and Bewcastle are just a few of the nearby castle remains.
