About this property

The cavernous, stylish Hanworth Barn was originally built in 1846 and has been tastefully restored to offer luxurious, spacious accommodation for large families and groups of friends. With six beautifully finished bedrooms, it sleeps up to twelve guests and is also pet friendly. You are very welcome to take two of your furry friends to share your holiday.

Hanworth Barn is set within its own beautiful grounds at the heart of an historical farming estate. It is close to the hamlet of Thurgarton, just a mile from the picturesque village of Aldborough and five miles from the seaside town of Cromer. Surrounded by glorious countryside, you really have the best of both worlds at Hanworth Barn, total privacy and tranquility yet you are also within arms reach of some of the best of North Norfolk’s delights.

Steeped in history, the main open plan living space of Smarden Barn is a timber framed cathedral of good taste and sophistication. Under a full-length vaulted ceiling and exposed original beams, all with incredible craftsmanship, you will find a modern well-equipped kitchen, a wonderful dining area and a lounge space with sumptuous sofas arranged around the log burning stove. One whole wall of this magnificent space is made up of floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, offering incredible natural light and access to the rear garden. This is a wonderful social space where guests can keep the chef company, families can enjoy board games and afternoon tea can be taken in front of the fire on chilly days. In addition, Hanworth Barn enjoys a further vast sitting room with comfy sofas around an open fire. It features a huge picture window on one side and French doors on the other, opening onto the south facing terrace. This is a bright and airy space and perfect when you have large groups and not everyone wants to be doing the same thing. Perhaps you may want to take your time with the Sunday newspapers quietly. The views from all of the rooms in this sprawling house offer beautiful views. Also on the ground floor is a utility/laundry room, a shower room and the master bedroom suite.

Hanworth Barn has been wonderfully transformed to provide fabulously flexible accommodation. A number of the bedrooms offer zip and link beds which can be set up as super kings or twin beds. The delightful ground floor master bedroom offers a king-size, four poster bed, an en-suite bathroom and patio doors that lead to its own terrace. How magical! The first floor is home to another four splendid bedrooms and two bathrooms. One has a king-size bed, two have super king beds that can be twins plus there is a bunk room, ideal for the children in your party. Finally, the last bedroom is tucked away in the eaves and reached via a separate staircase. It again offers a super king bed that is convertible to twin beds. Each of the spacious bedrooms are decorated with calm, neutral palettes.

Outside, the enclosed pretty garden is mostly lawn. Guests can enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace using the barbecue  and enjoying the Norfolk sunshine. Within the grounds you will find a tennis court where you can perfect your serve and plenty of lovely walks directly from the barn.

Hanworth Barn is a rural idyll close to the village of Aldborough, five miles from the North Norfolk coast at Cromer and eight miles from the Georgian market town of Holt. Holt is home to some excellent art galleries, antique and book shops, butchers, greengrocers, delicious eateries and a maze of 18th century Georgian buildings hiding in wonderful courtyards and alleyways. It looks so pretty at Christmas when all of the shops display brightly lit trees on the front of the buildings.

Cromer is a quintessential British seaside resort. Perched on the very edge of the North Norfolk coast, it is famous for its delicious Cromer crabs, wide open beaches, its lighthouse, its iconic pier and its proud tradition of rnli service. The Henry Blogg Museum offers a wonderful insite into the lifeboat service’s history. Cromer boasts many small local independent shops and restaurants and feels a little as though you have gone back in time.

Slightly further around the coast is the charming Victorian seaside village of Mundesley. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, visitors enjoy breathtaking coastal walks on the Paston Way and the Norfolk Coast Path. Mundesley became popular with the Victorians after the opening of a railway in 1889.

National Trust lovers can enjoy Blickling Hall, Felbrigg Hall and Blakeney Point, all within easy reach of Hanworth Barn. Blickling Hall is a beautiful Jacobean mansion in 4600 acres brimming with ancient yew hedges, stunning mature gardens, hiking and cycle routes. If you have brought your dogs to Hanworth Barn, this is an excellent place for a dog walk.

Sheringham is another traditional seaside town. It was once an old fishing village and now offers a Blue Flag beach, scenic walks along the pretty promenade, colourful beach huts, a theatre, museums, cafes, tea rooms, restaurants and many special events. There is a Viking Festival each winter, celebrating the town history and the Crab and Lobster Festival and Sheringham Carnival in the summer months. There is also a Steam Gala in the autumn, celebrating the heritage North Norfolk Railway which runs from Sheringham to Holt, through Kelling with awesome sea views along the way. The National Trust’s Sheringham Park is a popular excursion with miles of hilly countryside covered with gorse and purple heather. Fantastic views can be found at the top of Beeston Bump, a large grassy hill 103 metres tall.

The celebrated Blakeney boasts a stunning, Instagram worthy harbour and entertaining seal trips which can be taken from the harbour or from Morston Quay. Further along the coast, Wells and Holkham are absolutely wonderful.
