Take the children to World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness (5.5 miles) or spend a day at National Trust's Fell Foot (10.5 miles) for lakeside views and water sports. The historic market town of Kendal (4 miles), known as the Gateway to the Lake District, has shops, restaurants and of course its renowned mint cake to help fuel you up the fells.
