Originally built as a corn mill in the 15th-century, with a 15 foot water wheel, it also worked as a timber mill and carpenter’s shop, specialising in horse drawn carts. The adjacent Mill Cottage and popular Mill Inn (17th-century) have entertained many famous visitors including poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who in 1803, overturned their cart and stayed overnight as they journeyed to Scotland. Authors, Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins resided in 1857; rock legend Peter Gabriel and former Prime Minister John Major stayed at The Mill when it operated as an award-winning small hotel. The holiday cottage was, at the time, the private residence of the hotel owners. Located at the foot of Souther Fell, The Mill is well placed to see the legendary ghosts of the Roman Army, who were first witnessed marching across the fell on a midsummer’s eve in 1735.
The Mill has been sympathetically renovated to provide contemporary comforts within its heavily beamed traditional interior.
The cot will not be available for parties of 4 as there would be no room for the cot in the twin room.
There is open water in the property grounds.

Had a lovely stay over the new year. Cottage is very nice. (Not for you if you are very tall) You do need the log burner on all of the time as it is very very cold this time of year, there is a lot of single glazing in the kitchen and it is like walking into a fridge, keep the door shut at all times as there is no heating it, same with the bathroom, quick wash an out ! Was disappointed that we had gone for new year and the pub next door closed at 5pm NYE and didn’t open for another two days, the day we were leaving. Saying that we would return in the summer as it really was a nice cottage in a lovely setting and perfect base for walking. Chris and Lorraine were lovely people too and just next door if you need them. Thank you for a lovely stay

Perfect relaxing countryside family getaway. The property was ideal, situated in a very quiet village. The cottage had everything we needed and was a really good base camp for all of the Lake District activities we had planned. Friendly and helpful host. All round wonderful family holiday. Nothing bad to say at all.

We had a wonderful stay at this cottage. It is set in a beautiful and quiet location, perfect for fell walking with some stunning walks from the doorstep. The cottage itself is cosy, comfortable, and makes for a really relaxing retreat. Our host was very welcoming and helpful. A real highlight was the pub next door, serving superb food. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a peaceful getaway in beautiful surroundings.
