The Mill is a charming and characterful cottage in a tranquil village setting, ideal for families, couples, and walkers seeking a peaceful retreat in the Lake District. Guests consistently praise the warm hospitality of the hosts, the cosy atmosphere, and the beautiful surroundings with excellent walking opportunities from the doorstep. The cottage is well-equipped and spotlessly clean, with thoughtful touches enhancing the stay. While most reviews are highly positive, a few guests noted the cottage can be cold in winter. Overall, The Mill offers a delightful countryside escape with welcoming hosts and stunning views.
Multiple reviews mention the cottage being spotlessly clean and well-maintained, with no negative comments about cleanliness. Only one review references a negative experience, but it does not mention cleanliness specifically.
The location is repeatedly described as beautiful, peaceful, and perfect for walking, with easy access to the Lake District and nearby towns. Guests appreciate the quiet village setting and proximity to local attractions.
Most guests found the cottage cosy, comfortable, and well-equipped, with special mention of comfy beds and a relaxing atmosphere. However, a few reviews mention the cottage being cold in winter, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom, which slightly lowers the score.
The cottage is praised for its well-equipped kitchen, log burner, and overall facilities. Some guests noted the need for extra heating in winter and a temporary issue with the wood burner, but overall facilities are highly rated.

Originally built as a corn mill in the 15th-century, with a 15 foot water wheel, it also worked as a timber mill and carpenter’s shop, specialising in horse drawn carts. The adjacent Mill Cottage and popular Mill Inn (17th-century) have entertained many famous visitors including poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who in 1803, overturned their cart and stayed overnight as they journeyed to Scotland. Authors, Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins resided in 1857; rock legend Peter Gabriel and former Prime Minister John Major stayed at The Mill when it operated as an award-winning small hotel. The holiday cottage was, at the time, the private residence of the hotel owners. Located at the foot of Souther Fell, The Mill is well placed to see the legendary ghosts of the Roman Army, who were first witnessed marching across the fell on a midsummer’s eve in 1735.
The Mill has been sympathetically renovated to provide contemporary comforts within its heavily beamed traditional interior.
The cot will not be available for parties of 4 as there would be no room for the cot in the twin room.
There is open water in the property grounds.

Perfection! If it was possible to award higher than 5 stars I would as The Mill and it's host Lorraine and Chris truly deserve it! The Mill is excellent ,outstanding, beautiful accommodation in a beautiful peaceful location central to all the lakes has to offer. Our hosts , Lorraine and Chris were genuinely warm and friendly from the start of our stay and throughout it. Nothing was too much for them to ensure our stay was perfect. The Mill itself is charming and beautiful with top notch facilities and was spotlessly clean. The location is stunning and serene. Myself and my wife are already planning our next holiday there and we would not consider staying anywhere else other than the Mill or having any other hosts than Lorraine and Chris. The Mill is truly a jewel in the Crown of the Lake District! Thank you Lorraine and Chris for a wonderful holiday at your outstandingly beautiful property. We will be back as soon as we can. Many thanks, see you both soon, all the best ,Paul and Caroline.

We have never stayed anywhere so cold inside. The living room heater did not work. The wood burner was waiting for repairs. The bedroom heaters hardly ever came on. Our request for assistance with the heaters was met with a curt refusal, bordering on rude, which left us feeling very unsettled (and very cold - we had to wear scarves and down jackets indoors to keep warm). The host entered the cottage while we were out, took the warm duvet she had given us the night before and replaced it with a colder one. Inappropriately, she did not notify us before or afterwards. We were on edge for the rest of our stay. If we could have afforded to go elsewhere we would have. This was the worst self-catering cottage experience we have ever had. It was a great shame, it could have been a great experience as The Mill is a lovely characterful cottage and we liked it very much.

Lovely cute cottage at the foot of Blencathra. Easy reach of several other wainwright starting points. The log burner really warms up the cottage nicely and you can purchase extra logs easily from the owner who is very helpful.I’ll definitely stay again
