Guests say

Stone Howe is a well-regarded cottage in Ambleside, praised for its cleanliness, comfortable furnishings, and tranquil yet convenient location. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, beautiful garden, and the views. While some noted the decor could be refreshed and the conservatory furniture updated, the overall sentiment is positive with many guests planning return visits.

Guests consistently report that Stone Howe is spotlessly clean, with high standards of cleanliness throughout the property. One mention of a dirty microwave and stained duvet, but these seem to be isolated incidents.

The property's location is highly praised for its quietness and proximity to the village. However, some guests note the steep climb to the property can be challenging for those with mobility issues, and parking can be tight.

The majority of guests find Stone Howe very comfortable, with special mentions of the super king bed and cosy conservatory. A few guests suggested improvements to the conservatory chairs and mentioned the small ensuite shower room.

Facilities are generally considered excellent, with a well-equipped kitchen and effective central heating. Some guests noted discrepancies between photos and actual furnishings, and a few minor maintenance issues like the need for better TV instructions and shower room size.

There are no specific mentions of gifts or extra thoughtful touches provided by the hosts. While some guests suggested the addition of books, games, and DVDs, these are not guaranteed amenities and thus cannot be scored.

About this property

A quirky and stylish bungalow just a short stroll from the centre of the village of Ambleside. Accommodation is perfectly arranged on one floor, with large windows and pretty conservatory making the most of the sensational views.

Outside Stone Howe guests will find private parking for one car and a charming fenced pathway crossing to the house. The sitting room is extremely spacious and bright, with deep-cushioned sofas, electric stove and large TV with DVD. Plenty of room for everyone to spread out and enjoy a film or cheeky afternoon nap. Doors lead to a gorgeous conservatory with delightful views, perfect for relaxing with the papers or just soaking up the sunshine. The kitchen/dining room is clean and bright, once again making the most of the views and with a door leading to a very useful washing and drying room. The bedrooms are both tastefully furnished and have super comfortable beds. The super king size room has an en-suite shower room and the generous twin room, with unusual round window, has use of the family bathroom with shower over the bath.

The village of Ambleside is a popular destination in itself. Interesting shops are around every corner along with a wide choice of wonderful restaurants and cafés, cosy Lake District pubs and specialist shops stocking clothing and equipment for walkers and climbers. The village also boasts two independent cinemas, a famous pizzeria and jazz bar playing live music. Lake Windermere is only a short walk away, with Windermere Lake Cruises departing regularly from the pier and transporting visitors across the lake to Bowness and Lakeside.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

Fabulous location close to the town centre. The kitchen had everything we needed and the property was very clean and tidy. We struggled using the TV. Not sure if you need a better remote to switch between ordinary channels and the LG streaming services, or better instructions. Our only other issue was the showers. The one in the bath was difficult to use because of the position of the grab rail. The shower room in the bedroom is tiny. We were fine using the bath, which was lovely, but feel that other people should be aware before booking. Overall we had a lovely time and would stay there again.
